I'd added a layer of paper towels on the helmet to see how it worked compared to the newsprint. I do like the effect and I may try it again. It seems a bit more solid than the newsprint and easier to spot gaps when I'm layering.
I took some more photos before I started my next stage, which was adding more to the jawline on the helmet. The way it started out I only covered up my face with the helmet, now it's going a lot lower. I'll need to add more layers of paiper mache onto the carddboard, but it's shaping up nicely.
I think the next thing I'll be doing is getting some heavy ply cardboard and design the face. I want the face raised up a bit so it's more distinctive, especially in the cheeks. That's where I'll be adding some fiddly bits to give it that more industrial look instead of the traditional appearance. I also need some long strips cut out to make the ring around the head.
And I haven't even gotten to the neckplate and the tubes.
