The story occurs just minutes after Terror of the Zygons with Sarah Jane complaining about why they are not in London like he was promising. Oh Sarah Jane, you should know better by now. Naturally some button on the console goes ping! and they are off to the far edge of the known universe. They land on a planet rich in antimatter, where a bunch of researchers have died and their homeworld has sent a rescue ship which looks something like an upside down Federation ship and is commanded by a guy who looks a lot like Spike and Justin Beiber's lovechild.
See?
He's really shouty and thinks the Doctor and Sarah Jane are responsible for the deaths and keeps wanting to have them shot. There is one last surviving member of the expedition. Professor Sorenson, who is obsessedc with trying to save the planet. Their world is running out of energy, and the antimatter might be the shortcut to a brighter future. Yeah, you can guess where this is headed. They find lots of these antimatter crystals at the edge of this big black pit that apparently leads into some other dimension or something.
What's causing all the ruckus is the planet itself, it's self aware and doesn't want it's precious antimatter stolen. Considering it's general rarity in the universe, I can sort of understand. They try leaving the planet, but the ship can't leave orbit because the planet is wanting it's antimatter back. They dumped most of it before they boosted to orbit, but the Professor kept one container, and so the planet is keeping them locked in orbit.
Oh, and the anti-quark radiation from the crystals is turning the Professor into a soul sucking monster aboard ship. Lots of the crew end up dead, and Captain BeiberSpike goes total crazy and tries to use some kind of radioactive dohickey on the monster professor. That works out beautifully, creating a lot of energy doppelgangers (guess the show wanted to get their money's worth out of that particular effect.) So the Doctor takes the original and corporeal Professor Monster back down to the planet and tosses him in the big black pit the antimatter monster came from. The day is saved, the Professor is returned to normal, and the Doctor convinces him to try a new line of energy research.
This was another episode I'd more or less forgotten. The story is more or less a rip-off of Forbidden Planet, complete with glowy red energy monster. I watched it with the info text on, and got some fun insights on how the show was put together. It's not my favorite episode so far, but still pretty good, the actors in the Captain Beiberspike role is clearly putting some teeth marks in the set.
It was entertaining enough, but easy to see why I ended up forgetting it. Not the greatest or worse moment in the series, but it did it's job of filling up four episodes.
