I finally saw The Room.  It was kind of underwhelming, to be honest.  It would have been a more enjoyable movie if it were a little bit worse, or at least bad in a juicier way, but as it was, I found it a little too dry and dull throughout most of it to be properly so-bad-it's-good.  Maybe a drinking game would have spiced things up.  Or maybe Ed ( Read more... )

I enjoyed it, but I think if it went back to the inspirations of the earlier movies (wuxia, fairy tales and mythology, diesel-era scifi serials) rather than relying so much on callbacks to earlier parts of the saga, it might have been a richer experience. If you get a chance to see Sholay and you're not terribly squeamish about cinematic violence, I highly recommend it. It's great fun. I've become more intrigued by Mad Max: Fury Road. I normally don't care about action movies that don't involve superheroes or space, but apparently this one has kickass practical effects and a strong and interesting disabled woman as a main character, and certain antifeminist elements are whining about it.

In general, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has awesome casting. Even when they're not physical matches to their comics counterparts (616 Tony Stark is tall and 616 Peggy is a blonde, etc.), the actors tend to own the roles ( Read more... )

Really hoping that Netflix's Daredevil isn't just going to be "brooding and/or jerkish white guy punches people in a gritty urban setting." Really hoping.

Also hoping that Age of Ultron is good to my favorite characters.

Jupiter Ascending is even more amusing if you think of it as the Wachowski sibs' Bella/Jacob crack AU with the serial numbers filed off. Amateur reviews seem to indicate the Jupiter Ascending is the good kind of ridiculous, not the dull kind. (I never expected it to be good-good.) Now to find a friend or family member who also wants to see it, since I prefer to go to the movies with other people.

I've now seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I enjoyed it, but it had some of the same problems as Avengers, with having to stuff so much into one movie. A lot of the elements didn't really have the time to accumulate the emotional weight to be really satisfying.
