wascally_weasel had a spare ticket for
the Raveonettes last night, as his partner had a conflicting gig she was going to.
We met up at Angel, had a beer, and went to find a hearty meal on a bitter evening. We went to the
s&m cafe for sausages and mash, then headed off to the gig. We'd judged it perfectly to avoid the support band and have time to get a drink and position ourselves for the main event. Or we would have if they'd been playing by the established rules of gigdom. The Raveonettes were already onstage and playing well before nine o'clock. We pushed as far forward into the crowd, split between young hipsters and middle-aged music fans, as we could. Overall, it wasn't the greatest gig I've been to. Their sound didn't work as well live as on albums for me, and I found the strobe lighting and dramatic fades to blackout in the middle of songs a bit overdone. Still, it was good to see a band I liked, and
Sharin Foo was striking in person. They didn't play for all that long, and with the early start the gig was over by 9.45. So I was home in plenty of time for an early night.
