I saw the Rankin-Bass version of The Hobbit as a kid; that lead to the novel; and now we have the above to look forward to. Smaug was THE dragon as I grew up and I am so looking forward to finally hearing his voice!

Warning, it's a MLP fanfic story at the link in case you don't like that. But this is a well-done story, and just long enough to get the point across. I can think of some 'real' novels in bookstores that can't manage that.

That and it has a well-done and clever Tolkien reference in it near the end that some people might enjoy.( Read more... )

I thought I'd read it all when I read about Walt Disney's attempts at doing an animated adaptation of LOTR, with input from Professor Tolkien AFTER the script was done. (The response of that gently-born, soft-spoken Oxford don was essentially, "Not on your bloody life!")
