The Queendom of Nocturne
Warning, it's a MLP fanfic story at the link in case you don't like that. But this is a well-done story, and just long enough to get the point across. I can think of some 'real' novels in bookstores that can't manage that.
That and it has a well-done and clever Tolkien reference in it near the end that some people might enjoy.

I love the brief hook they give with it: "Come, all who are lonely or flawed or unhappy, and find all that you desire in the Queendom of Nocturne."
And it has a magnificent piece of art to go along with it, which I'll share here for those unwilling to look at the story.
It's Nightmare Rarity! And for those who don't follow the show, Rarity is a somewhat vain and egotistical unicorn who is also an artist and businesswoman, er, mare. She is also the holder/avatar (?) of Generosity, and has been shown as being both very clever and truly loyal to her friends. She's rather a complex character for a kid's show.
I'd go into more here but I'd be at it all night. It's best to say that the story is rather more mature and well done than most fanfic, and that the situation it sets up looks like it could support more stories as Nightmare Rarity brings her loving rule and promise of perfection to everyone in her world... whether they want it or not.
