Finished Spirited Away this morning.

"Stunning" doesn't even approach it. I want to show it to every ten-year-old girl I know (all one of them), and anyone else who will watch (and everyone should).

As if Princess Mononoke hadn't, Spirited Away has made me a faithful fan and devotee of Miyazaki. Beauty of this magnitude just doesn't occur naturally ( Read more... )

I guess I forgot to mention that last night (i.e. Friday night), we watched the George C. Scott A Christmas Carol, which has become our holiday tradition.

A week or so ago, we watched It's A Wonderful Life, one of the most wonderful movies ever. I'd like for it to become a tradition in our family; it certainly will be in mine.

Right on cue, the AFI has just released its latest movie ranking: 100 Years...100 Cheers - the 100 most inspiring movies of all time.

The connection being that these happen to be the same movies that make me cry.

Today I watched Maurice Tourneur's 1922 silent film version of R. D. Blackmore's Lorna Doone, one of my favorite novels of all time. It was a very lovely and well-directed film, though I was disappointed with the changes to the story. In the end, though, Tourneur's beautiful imagery won me over, and I will give it four stars.
