I took the Muttski out with me when I went to feed the horses.  The Kidling and I finished rebuilding his dog-house a couple weekends ago, so lately we've been leaving him outside (and chained) when we go out for extended periods, rather than leaving him locked in the house.  We also tie him ( Read more... )

     It's been a long day, and mostly a quiet one as well.  I had to come in to the bowling alley at 10am to meet the Pepsi-Co driver.  Soft-drinks aren't cheap, and I wonder if the amount of profit on the bottled stuff is even worth it.  On an order than cost just over $800, we make a little more than $200 profit.   That's a mighty thin margin, ( Read more... )

     There are times when I wonder, "What the heck am I doing out here?"  I suppose everyone has these little bouts of self-doubt now and again, and I would assume that they're equally unpleasant for everyone.  I think that in my case, it's mostly that there' s just so much to get done, that it's really overwhelming and that's what's creating this ( Read more... )

I dragged the kidling out of bed around 9am this morning (I'd been up since 6am) and he wanted to know "What's the special occasion?" for getting him up so early.  "There's work to do!" I retorted, and made a mental note to spray him with the water-bottle tomorrow instead of being nice about it.  ;)

     The deer are increasing in number, according to both my own observations and official counts.  This evening, we had four of them in our front yard; They were just passing through, heading south to wherever it is that they go.  They stopped and nibbled a bit of grass here and there, and checked out the bird-bath to see if there was any water ( Read more... )

The temperature climbed to +27c today, though a pleasant breeze (as compared to a gale-force wind, which is the norm around here!) helped cool things off a little.  On a bright sunny day though, the UV index was pretty high and thus my arms are pretty badly sunburned.  ( Read more... )

Well....

I can say with conviction that those "Deer Whistles" that are sold in many stores, are completely useless.  The idea is that they give off a shrill whistle that frightens the deer away.  Maybe, for deer that have never been around cars and other vehicles, a sound like that might be frightening.  For deer that live near highways ( Read more... )

Made it out to the farm without much trouble.  The Explorer does surprisingly well for fuel economy on the highway, much better than it does in the city.  I almost hit my first deer on the way out though - I was already past Shaunavon, only a few more minutes away from the farm, when a deer walked out right onto the road in front of me!
