Nightshift 34: Main Hallway, 2-East

Aug 17, 2008 01:41

[from here]Once out of the main hallway, Renamon relaxed a fraction. Possessions room or janitor closet, either way they didn't have far to go now. She clicked her flashlight on intermediately, but nothing was out so far. A part of her wondered how Orihime was faring, and then another part wondered where Rika was ( Read more... )

Phew, away for danger. For now. Though, Yukari hadn't run into any monsters in the hallways for a few days now, and she was planning on keeping it that way. At its best, they were a huge hindrance to deal with. At their worst, well... she already had a taste of that earlier, she could do without another session.

"Oh, I've got a few years practice under my belt," Yukari responded with an aura of pride. Hey, she took it up as a sport first, means of defense later; skill was important for both. "I'm in the club at my school." That much probably didn't sound like it was good enough to go up against the abominations that lurked around, but months of exploring and battling it off in Tartarus honed her skills when it came to facing moving targets such as, well... monsters. Landel's was almost comparable to the huge tower-- almost. In both places they trekked in the dark, fighting whatever tried to attack them. The differences was in time and equipment. Definitely location, too. Either way, Yukari was sure that with her desired weapon in ( ... )

A few years. A school club. It was nothing personal to Yukari, but at that moment, she sounded so young. Renamon had fought all her life, for life or death, another day or deletion, and they had people that should be in school clubs here. It made her all the more determinded to control the glitch and break the game. Children should not be here. No one should.

One thing at a time however. She continued walking. "Not a problem."

Beatrix paused at the top of the stairs and listened. She could hear a fight off to her left a bit, but that was it. She put a finger to her lips to indicate to Donna she should stay quiet before heading left, toward it. She hoped the fight was far enough away that they could slip by since the pharmacy was just around the corner.

Donna wasn't about to get them caught because of her big mouth, and yes, she knew she had one. Her lip closed up and she kept silent while following along behind their leader. Arlene apparently knew where she was going, and Donna was not going to give away their position by questioning that.

Good. It seemed Donna understood the point of silence when it was necessary. The Bride was fairly certain she could fend off most of the creatures in this place even as injured as she was, but the fight sounded more like two people fighting as opposed to a prisoner fighting a mutated animal.

She knew she wasn't the only killer in the populace.

She turned her flashlight off so they wouldn't draw attention to themselves. it was dark, yes, but the adjoining room let in moonlight from the skylights. They would be able to see well-enough.

Now that there was a safe distance between her and the fighting, the Bride paused and looked back to see if Donna had kept up. Considering the woman was watching her like a mother hen, she'd have been surprised if the woman hadn't been there.

"Down this hallway. There are more rudimentary medical supplies."

Although he was still cautious when moving out into the second floor corridor--making sure there was nothing in the immediate vicinity that was hungry for a human or otherwise--it was his special talent to blend seriousness with casualness. He had already looked ahead to this area.

The doll looked to Maki and smiled faintly. Capoeira had a lot to do with dance and things like that, didn't it? He could guess that was why she had such a fit body. "Remind me not to get on your bad side, then," he said, adding to his earlier comment.

As for what he'd studied in turn? Nothing, really. It was interesting to learn sometimes, but he had no use for it, having only supernatural strength and a lot of time to perfect some forms and techniques. Maki sounded pretty serious about it, if she was familiar with both the regional and modern.

"It takes a lot to get on my bad side," Naomi said, with a small smile. That was an outright lie, but she was supposed to be friendly and personable. "I started back in college, and just kept up with it." Despite protests. But there had always been protests about her lifestyle, her interests, her hobbies, her profession, her way of dressing....

She stayed behind, her own eyes carefully taking everything in. She didn't want to be surprised like she had been last night. But she doubted they would be - Ren seemed to be alert, and on top of things.

Well, he could say the same thing for himself, but that didn’t make it true.

He smiled, mostly in thought, but it didn’t fade even when he led the way into the hallway they wanted. He hadn’t been up this way much himself, but that was what maps were for, and he’d copied out his version enough times to have a good idea where the more notable areas were.

As expected, there didn't seem to be anyone on this side either, though if Sync strained his ears enough he could barely make out bits and pieces of a conversation nearby. He could only assume that there were others here after all, but not to the point where they were overwhelming. That suited his needs just fine, and so he continued on without much complaint.

Sync seemed to be in a hurry, not that Joshua was too upset at that. He was learning a lot just by watching and following along. Brainwashed patients, special powers, the layout of the building... yes, there was much to learn, and Joshua had always been a quick learner. That, and staying in a safe vantage point let him learn with no risk of being eviscerated, which was a definite plus.

Of course, Sync leaving without any warning left Joshua glancing around in utter bafflement, just barely catching the other boy out of the corner of his eye. Ah, the burdens he had to bear, when he chose the most recalcitrant of partners. He hustled after Sync, and instead of asking him to slow down- which wouldn't be welcomed, his former 'as long as you don't slow me down' comment still remembered- Joshua said, "So remind me, where are you going, again?"

While he conveyed a mixture of both relief and disappointment when he no longer felt the latter's presence, it quickly melted away when he heard him catch up moments later. It was as he stated before, and it was at least somewhat gratifying to know that his 'partner' had the sense to listen. Of course, this also meant that he'd be walking with a thorn in his side for a little longer, but at least they were almost at their destination. Speaking of which...

"I'm checking out the supplies," Sync answered in a matter-of-factly tone, seeing no need to beat around the bush with something so mundane. "You've seen what can happen to you if you're not careful. Might as well be prepared."

Whoever had come up with this Game didn't have the same sense of elegant design constraint that the Composer had, in Joshua's humble opinion. There was something about the Underground that was exciting, with action and clear-cut rules and well-defined goals to achieve. This was just sloppy all around, and the lack of psyches was rather sad, as well. What was the point of the Noise if you couldn't reach deep inside of yourself to stop them?

Ah, it was so sad! But Joshua couldn't do anything about it, yet, so he'd just have to follow along and do the best he could with what he had. The kid he was traveling with had some potential, that was one thing; he knew what he was doing, and that was another. "As prepared as you can be, anyway. I'm afraid that I'm not used to having to get close to things with just a shovel on my side."

Getting away quickly, that was the key.

Aidou ghosted through the corridor leaving the chapel, ignoring the continued conflict happening in front of the balcony. It remained of little concern to him. He'd gotten what he'd wanted--no, needed. He'd taken more blood than usual, more than would be healthy for the girl, but no less than what he required.

His regenerative abilities were so repressed, he needed a full stomach just to quicken his healing when it came to paltry flesh wounds.

Wiping the corner of his mouth with this thumb, the noble cleaned traces of blood away, looking more like a kitten that had just gotten into the cream. But he'd spent more time in the chapel than he should have; where had all the time gone? He still had other stops to make.
