Nightshift 34: Main Hallway, 2-East

Aug 17, 2008 01:41

[from here]Once out of the main hallway, Renamon relaxed a fraction. Possessions room or janitor closet, either way they didn't have far to go now. She clicked her flashlight on intermediately, but nothing was out so far. A part of her wondered how Orihime was faring, and then another part wondered where Rika was ( Read more... )

As expected, there didn't seem to be anyone on this side either, though if Sync strained his ears enough he could barely make out bits and pieces of a conversation nearby. He could only assume that there were others here after all, but not to the point where they were overwhelming. That suited his needs just fine, and so he continued on without much complaint.

Sync seemed to be in a hurry, not that Joshua was too upset at that. He was learning a lot just by watching and following along. Brainwashed patients, special powers, the layout of the building... yes, there was much to learn, and Joshua had always been a quick learner. That, and staying in a safe vantage point let him learn with no risk of being eviscerated, which was a definite plus.

Of course, Sync leaving without any warning left Joshua glancing around in utter bafflement, just barely catching the other boy out of the corner of his eye. Ah, the burdens he had to bear, when he chose the most recalcitrant of partners. He hustled after Sync, and instead of asking him to slow down- which wouldn't be welcomed, his former 'as long as you don't slow me down' comment still remembered- Joshua said, "So remind me, where are you going, again?"

While he conveyed a mixture of both relief and disappointment when he no longer felt the latter's presence, it quickly melted away when he heard him catch up moments later. It was as he stated before, and it was at least somewhat gratifying to know that his 'partner' had the sense to listen. Of course, this also meant that he'd be walking with a thorn in his side for a little longer, but at least they were almost at their destination. Speaking of which...

"I'm checking out the supplies," Sync answered in a matter-of-factly tone, seeing no need to beat around the bush with something so mundane. "You've seen what can happen to you if you're not careful. Might as well be prepared."

Whoever had come up with this Game didn't have the same sense of elegant design constraint that the Composer had, in Joshua's humble opinion. There was something about the Underground that was exciting, with action and clear-cut rules and well-defined goals to achieve. This was just sloppy all around, and the lack of psyches was rather sad, as well. What was the point of the Noise if you couldn't reach deep inside of yourself to stop them?

Ah, it was so sad! But Joshua couldn't do anything about it, yet, so he'd just have to follow along and do the best he could with what he had. The kid he was traveling with had some potential, that was one thing; he knew what he was doing, and that was another. "As prepared as you can be, anyway. I'm afraid that I'm not used to having to get close to things with just a shovel on my side."
