My sculpting teacher sent me something from his sister who had recently been to Dubai with a friend. The teacher is ultra liberal, FYI, which is fine. He was in the peace core in Afghanistan in 68, was in the military (drafted). Funny, I wonder what Mrs. Moose would make of this uber liberal? Would the tree huger get respect for serving, even if he's probably anti war? What a conundrum?
Anyway, the thing he sent was about the burka that women in Afghanistan have to wear, and while I agree with most of it, I could read through the line that it was biased in its own way. It made it out that the garment prevented the bonding of a mother and child, but it failed to say that the garment is not worn at home (which the women spend most of their time at anyway since they are not allowed to work. It said that only men can be doctors and that they didn't treat women, but then showed women in head coverings delivering a baby. So which is it? Yes, the treatment of women in many parts of the world, esp. the middle east is abysmal, but this one garment is not the worst thing, IMHO. I think of the unbelievable getup's that some nuns wore in the last century, layer upon layer and winged habits that they donned even in the hottest parts of Africa. And then think of the layers of clothes that our fore bearers wore not 100 years ago or so, bustles and petticoats and even the men in their wool everything in the heat of summer. And the bathing suites for women? Yes, we've been there. It will take time for the idiocies of the world to go away.. only for new ones to be invented.
Right now it's very comfortable out and in. Actually it was a decent day, cooler than expected. Still no rain though.
Biv is champing at the bit for a foundation for some extra money. Now she's desperate because she's going to visit a friend in FL in August. Or so she says. Wondering when she'll ask for an advance. I have not yet told her that there is a cremation on Sat. I know that if I tell her, she'll calculate the loss and just take time off, even though she wants the money. I'm waiting to see if after the Sat, if she takes a day off. I'll keep you posted.
As expected, she's now telling me she's done with her bf. Just like last year... tired of him. More like got as much as I can out of him for now... what a way to live.
One of her friends was arrested earlier this year for drug dealing. Now his brother just turned up dead from an overdose. And she's going to the wake to support the wife of the brother who's in jail? Why? She doesn't want to be associated with the drug crowd she says. More like she doesn't want to be recognized or pulled back in maybe? Oh to be a fly on those walls.
I made Grafix's taco salad for the BBQ I went to on Sunday. Very yummy, but I mixed it too soon. I waited till we got there, but I didn't realize we were not getting right into the food. So it sat for about an hour and by the time we ate it, it was not crunchy any more. However it was still good and everyone loved it. I told the hostess the recipe so she can make it. I also got a recipe to try for a dessert. I think that would be really neat to make up recipe cards for your offering when you go somewhere. No one had ever had taco salad before in this group. Thanks Grafix.
I think I have mentioned that I have planted a number of catalpa trees at the cemetery since they grow fast and just about anywhere. I just read an article about one catalpa that is 100 years old and 70 feet tall. Makes me happy that the trees will live long and prosper.. well, if the droughts don't kill them.
Had two moles cross my path today. One at my brother's house, and one just ran out by my shed. Not sure what the significance of that is. Also something is eating things in my garden. I found a pea pod polished off, and a tomato mostly eaten. Probably the chipmunk I guess.
I think I had more to say, but of course it's gone. Tomorrow and tomorrow..as they say.
