We turned Dollar in yesterday. There were a few tears when I said good bye to him at the kennel. While we aren't sure he'll make the program, I know that the school will find him a good situation (working or with a family) and he'll be happy with anyone who can show him a little love. 49F and misty this morning. Since this is the first day I'm really feeling better I did a quick 5 mile ride down to the Back Bay instead of a longer ride. Glasses fogged up a bit in the mist, I now understand the motivation for contacts and maybe I'll give them another shot. Apparently I'm going on long enough rides that I need to start thinking about what I eat during the ride. I was doing pretty good up until mile 25 where I started to notice I was a little hungry and thirsty. By mile 30, zombie mode with a head ache starting. Home was at mile 38 and by then I was convinced I needed fluids and was going to migraine. ( Read more... )

Update: Tension on the shifter cable was way loose it turns out. Tightened that up (for the 3rd time) and then adjusted the lower/upper limit screws (for the 100th time) and it works. I think I even managed to fix the original problem. ( Read more... )

This marks the end of my first month of The Cycling Experiment. I did a total of 52.1 miles this week with an average speed of 13.2 mph. The 30mile ride I planned today turned out to only be about 20 which was a good thing! The wind coming back was a bastard. Need to remember to drink more, was definitely dehydrated at the end.

I got a whole bunch of fun gizmo's for my bike this week (frame bike pump, spare tire, bike computer, second water bottle) so there was absolutely no excuse for me not to go on a bike ride today. I had intended to bike around the bay but ended up way down in Corona del Mar.

I was looking at bike routes last night and my current favorite is 195 miles long according to google maps. It goes Boston to Arlington to Andover to Exeter, NH to Kittery, ME, swings north of Portland and hits Sabego Lake then up through Gray and catches the 9 to Monmouth, ME. I started looking at bike routes today. First pass says that I'll have about 200 miles in MAINE alone. The suggested route through Massachusetts has me biking half way across the state before I turn north for New Hampshire. I obviously need more maps :)
