complete guide to somarium
We originally had different versions of the "guide" to Somarium, but now it's been compacted into one giant one. Sure it's lengthy, in fact, it's very lengthy, but it wouldn't be a complete guide if it weren't. It has almost everything you need to know about the game setting. Of course, we can't predict or make note of every single possible circumstance that occur, but if they ever come up, we'll add it to this guide.
If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to contact one of the mods or comment on the
Questions/Suggestions page.

❦ quick stats
❖ type
Both community and journal based. The main community is for logging while the personal journals serve as the "network". While posts from journals are of course more frequent, the main comm also sees a lot of action as that's where all physical interactions take place. Refer to the
Posting Guide for formatting specifics.
❖ pace
This can vary depending on the season, but in general the speed is usually about medium. It does pick up during events before slowing down again. Backlogging happens quite frequently and is perfectly acceptable.
❖ activity checks
Occur during the last 7 days of every month. There are three different options players can choose from, and the requirements can be found on the
Rules page.
❖ applications
They're open during the first week of every month. Reservations are always open and will last until the end of the current cycle. We mostly focus on the personality and sample sections when judging applications. Optional prompts are provided for samples, and reusing old applications or applications made for other games is acceptable so long as the samples are made just for Somarium.
❖ time
Somarium runs on the 1 Game day = 1 RL day standard. There are times when events will "change" the time; that is one RL week may count for only one game day. We will inform the players should this happen. This is usually reserved for events that would occur during one game day, but it would be impossible to actually play everything out in one RL day.
❖ events
Somarium uses
Moon Cycles as a kind of "event" calendar. There are game-plot events that occur once a month which are almost always optional. Character based events also happen during the downtime between the game events, and are frequently encouraged!
❖ concept
Somarium's main gimmick is the dream concept. Not only are characters in a dream world, but their dreams are vulnerable to being made for public viewing. Players can write dream posts that can really be about anything. As of September, characters also have the option of having interactive dreams where they can create an environment and others can interact with them. We incorporate this dreaming aspect in all of our main events and there will be even more involved as we continue through the game plot.
❖ plot
There is an overarching plot that is moving along at this point in time. It's gained a bit more speed with the recent introduction of the
dreamwalking concept. Still, it serves more of a backdrop for character interaction. You can read more about the premise
here and see the game's plot evolution in the
Event Timeline.
❦ setting
❖ it's an alternate world
Somarium is in essence part of an alternate world that is usually entered via sleeping. There are other certain circumstances, such as a state of unconsciousness, dying or death, or canonly travel between worlds. Daydream or deep thoughts of concentration or meditation can also serve as a "gateway" into Somarium. Basically, any state of mind where the character is "disconnected" from reality will work, and it can even be for an instant. There is no known way out. Your character cannot just willingly wake up out of the world. It should be noted that on August 10, 2011 it was learned that the planet itself is called Hypnosia and that Somarium is but one of many cities within it.
❖ dreams
Somarium's main theme is based on the concept of "dreams," and in the game players can make dream posts. To put it simply, dream posts are whatever the character happened to be dreaming that night. These can range from the silly and crack to the serious and downright depressing. The dreams are broadcasted over the network, and other characters can respond and react to them. These can be used as potential CR opportunities as well as character development.
❖ moon cycles
Another unique characteristic is Somarium's use of the moon cycles. As mentioned before, they serve as a calendar and timeline for the game. There are a total of eight phases: 1/4 Wax --> Half --> 3/4 Wax --> Full --> 3/4 Wane --> Half --> 1/2 Wane --> New Moon. These phases will usually have some kind of affect on the characters and the setting. The major events will always fall on the Full and New Moon.
❖ dream effects
Only applicable for dream posts. Complete explanation can be found
here. Essentially, various effects can be transmitted from the dreamer to the viewer. It's completely optional for both the poster and the viewer. A dream does not have to have dream effects, and if it does have some, a viewer does not have to experience them. It is completely up to the players. It only lasts for as long as the dream.
❖ dreamwalkers & dreamwalking
Characters have the ability to enter into dreams through a metaphysical form. It is similar to having an out-of-body experience or astral projection. However, this is only limited to dreams. They cannot go through the real world in this form. As a dreamwalker, characters can also learn different abilities and interact with the dream. Information can be found
here and there is an IC manual
here. As of right now, characters are only allowed to do this in mod-posted events.
❖ locations + world map
Somarium is filled with many interesting places and locations. It is a giant circle, with a village in the center and a modern city surrounding it. The city is split into five different districts (in order going counter-clockwise): Resident, Shopping, Business & Arts, Industrial, Government. Surrounding all of it is the desert, which stretches out for hundreds of miles. Check out the
World Map and the giant list
Places to see more details and possible locations found within Somarium. Players are free to create and make up any local building or location as deemed necessary.
❦ getting started
❖ a dream self is formed
A dream self is created once the character has appeared within Somarium, and any events that occur in their home world during their stay in Somarium will continue on as if nothing happened. They will not obtain any new memories of their world nor can they dream about them. The only exception to this is the canon update (details depicted further down in its own little section). Otherwise, the only source of information they can have about their world after their arrival into Somarium will be from anyone who comes in from a later point in their time.
❖ upon arrival
Characters will "wake up" in any place within Somarium. This includes the city, the village, on the floating mountain, just outside in the desert, within buildings, outside buildings, in the fountain, in the lake, on the roof of someone's house, in someone's room-be creative! In terms of condition, characters will usually arrive into Somarium in the same state they were in canon. Therefore, a character is coming in injured or right after death, it is up to the player in what condition the character will arrive. However, any life threatening injuries will be healed, so a character can still be seriously injured, but not life threatening. Any clothing or items will also come with the character. This includes any weapons and potential pets (refer to the
Rules page for more details).
Characters will find the following items either on them or around them upon arriving into Somarium: the Dreamberry and Special Cards.
❖ the dreamberry
The
Dreamberry page gives the full technicalities for this device, but in essence the Dreamberry is a communication device that is pretty much like a phone. The following posts can be made with the Dreamberry: Dreams, Voice/Video, and Text.
❖ special cards
The
Special Cards are a relatively new item that characters receive, and they act as supplements to the Dreamberry. They are the size of playing cards, and have their own unique design. These cards are different from the other cards around Somarium (see
here) in that they store certain types of memories. These may be used in game related events, and will be updated every now and then.
❖ what to do
Once a character has settled in, what they do from there is completely up to you. Settle into the city life, explore the different the dreams, get involved with both player and game plots. You can start organizations, try and rebel against everyone else, stir up trouble, start a business-there's a lot of different possibilities.
❦ making a living
❖ currency
There is a basic currency system that exists mostly for logistics and practical purposes. It's fairly simple and for the most part can be assumed and handwaved. Essentially, all characters -- both current and incoming -- will have an account already created for them with 10,000 DP, or Dream Points, available to them. DP can be earned in various ways through jobs or just simply by dreaming. That's right, characters paid to just exist in Somarium (lucky, huh?). There is also a Dream Card that basically serves as a credit card. All accounts are updated automatically.
❖ jobs
Characters can either create their own store or find a job anywhere in Somarium. Anything can really go, So if your character wants to be a police officer, waiter, banker, construction worker, run a shop/business, etc. they are more than welcome to do so. If your character is looking for a higher political power, they'll have to earn it ICly, and we just ask players to give us a heads up so we can try and work it out as well.
❖ obtaining items
Housing and transportation vehicles can be obtained for "free" (don't have to buy a house, but you may still need to pay rent for apartments). However, other items such as food, furniture, etc., will more than likely have to be "bought". Characters will normally have enough funds to purchase anything they will need to live, unless the player chooses to make them poor. All transactions can be assumed and handwaved.
❖ housing
As mentioned above, housing can be easily obtained. All a character has to do is just find a vacant place and claim it. They can even customize it any way they want. Should a character ever drop out or just leave, the residence will return to its original state. Players are free to make up whatever they want. "Create" new apartment buildings or housing locations. Refer to the
Residence listing to see what's currently available, and sign up
here to be added.
❖ pets
If your character did not have a pet to bring with them, they are free to adopt any of the pets and animals available in Somarium. Standard fare pets are available in numerous pet shops, and wild animals are game as well. Even the monsters in the desert are tameable, though they would not be able to enter the barrier.
❦ the world
❖ ghosts and NPCs
There are two types of NPCS: the standard ones that live with the characters and the "ghosts". Detailed information can be found in the
Ghosts & NPCs page. For a quick reference, the standard NPCs can be used and godmodded in any way. The only exception is characters can't have any standing relationships with them as that would require OC interaction. In general, the NPCs behave more like sheep with some personality. It is also possible to kill them or use them as worker bees.
❖ dream energy
It is very similar to the concept of mana, or world energy. However, the dream energy comes off dreams, and like there are different types of dreams, there are different types of dream energy. This carries over to nightmares. The dream energy is used to help maintain the world and plays an important part in Somarium.
❖ wildlife
Somarium has its own set of creatures. The scarecrows in particular are the ones that people encounter the most. See
Creatures. But as a quick note, other than Somarium based animals, there are a lot of Earth based animals roaming around. This includes both domestic and wild animals. It is also possible to capture and/or tame any of the animals.
❖ language
While the Dreamberries function as a universal translator for its current inhabitants, the world of Somarium has it's own unique language. Only parts of it can be translated by the Dreamberry, while the rest will look like symbols. An example of Somarium's native language can be seen
here.
❖ technology
Even though there's a rustic village plopped right in the middle of it, Somarium is very much a modern city. For ease of reference, the technology mirrors the 21st century-with some minor advancements. If there's ever any question of what's available, feel free to ask a mod.
❖ the barrier
There is a barrier that surrounds the outskirts of the city. In the past, Desert Passes were required to get through the barrier. However, residents can freely pass through it without any extra effort. Monsters from outside still cannot enter the city.
It should be noted that the barrier is actually invisible but if touched it will appear as a wall of glyphs and be hard as concrete. When a character passes through the barrier, they will feel a strange, electric-like tingly feeling. Only during certain times does the barrier ever go completely down.
❖ cards
There are special cards that can be found and used in Somarium. Usually the cards just appear next to the Dreamberries. However, once touched, the user will be propelled to use it, as if possessed. The effects of the cards vary and usually depicted by the design. (See the
Cards list for more details).
❦ within somarium
❖ the castle
Once upon a time, the centerpiece of Somarium was the floating castle that drifted tranquilly above Somni City. Since
August 20, 2010, the floating castle is no more. The castle crashed at the start of the desert, and sunk into a black sink hole in the sands on
August 28, 2010. The floating castle used to be the home of the Overlord, but now the only proof of its existence are the stories from the older residents and the general books and postcards that give accounts and visual pictures about it.
❖ the floating mountain
As of
February 1, 2011, the floating mountain is no longer stationary and can be found floating around Somarium-just like the floating castle before it. At its base in the valley, there is also the
Coliseum as well as a slowly growing airport. Located within the Coliseum is a
training facility. The NPC Aisling first took characters here to teach them about dreamwalking. There are hints that there might be something else hidden within the mountain itself, but what?
❖ fountain
The fountain located in the very center of Somarium and within the village, Espoir, is a grand looking one. The large rabbit statue is perfectly symmetrical and its water is always very clean. It has been the site of many emotional events. Friendships have bonded, great fights exploded-even the fountain itself was destroyed at one point. However, its true importance is the fact that it is the secret entrance to the underground tunnels. The panel is located at the very base of the statue. Characters may get a little wet accessing it (or jump from the edge to the center platform).
❖ tunnels
The tunnels were first introduced on
July 12, 2009. The network lies right underneath the village with the fountain serving as its entrance. It was apparently used as some kind of underground bunker and means of evacuations. Whatever traps that had been originally placed were now deactivated. All the rooms and tunnels are also accessible. More information about the tunnels, including a map, can be found
here.
❖ lake
At the edge of the Residential District is a large lake. The floating mountain used to stay stationary above it, but not anymore. While most of its water is within the barrier, some of it edges out into the desert. Fortunately, no monsters can enter Somarium through its waters, but that doesn't mean that the desert side of the lake is safe. There is also a friendly lake monster named "Nessie" swimming within its depths. Don't worry, she won't bite.
❦ outside somarium
❖ desert
The desert is a mysterious, vast landscape fraught with dangerous monsters and unknown areas. Recent discoveries have hinted of small military base camps scattered around the desert, as well other unknown "things." Not many have dared to venture too far out into the desert, so who knows what could be out there?
❖ the sink hole
When the floating castle crashed into the desert, a large sink hole was formed. Now the hole is covered by a dark, cracked but impenetrable glass. It rests just a few miles or so outside of the barrier to the Residential District. Despite its glassy substance, it is firm and has a lot of traction so characters can walk upon it with ease.
❖ the mysterious statue
Atop the sink hole is a mysterious 20-story tall
statue, its meaning not yet discovered by the characters in Somarium. Sometimes the strange blades will mysteriously spin. They are sharp, though, so anyone who dares to climb it should take caution. The statue has played interesting roles in past game events, and has been shown to have the ability to hover in mid-air and create a strange, hard almost tar like substance. It is indestructible at this point in time. The following inscription can be read at its base:
"To find the answers you seek,
Follow the rabbit down its hole.
Don't forget to use force!
The statue can be heavy."
❖ ruins
The ruins were discovered during the 1920s AU event and remained as a permanent fixture on
May 5, 2011. They can be found crumbling and half-buried around the gigantic black sink hole. There are some very primitive carvings and wall paintings similar to Egyptian hieroglyphs all over the insides of the ruins, depicting big black shapes going in and out of the murky sink hole, as well as beasts of all shapes and sizes. Likewise, there are depictions of dangers, of people getting forcibly pulled and swallowed into it, and a woman overseeing the events from a luxurious throne. More details about some particular details found within the ruins can be read
here.
❖ beyond the desert
Local maps indicate that there is something beyond the desert, and there are records claiming that there is a vast mountain range bordering the desert. There are also claims of an ocean that empties into a giant chasm-as if it were the edge of the world. The floating mountain had come from the desert, so perhaps it holds another hint to this claim. But not many have recently traveled that far out, so who knows?
As of July 20, 2011, it's become known that there are other cities outside of Somarium and that there are other populations out there.
❦ character effects
❖ needs
There is always an abundance of food available to them, however there is a restocking schedule when the stores restock: every Wednesday and Saturday. There are times when things might get sold out or restock at a slower rate, and we'll include any of these changes in the Moon Cycle posts. Characters who have unnatural food needs, such as vampires or cannibals will find their need significantly decreased. There are also in-game substitutes that they can use as nourishment. While these urges will occur every now and then, it is not as often and not as necessary. If anything, the local NPCs provide for excellent character fodder.
❖ sleep coma
When a character is placed on hiatus, they can sometimes go into a sleep coma. Basically, the character is dead asleep the whole time. There is currently no IC explanation as to why characters go into these sleep comas, but they've been accepted as another one of Somarium's strange phenomenon.
❖ magic & abilities
For the most part, characters are able to retain their magical/supernatural abilities when they come to Somarium. However, characters with extremely powerful abilities will have to have their abilities be somewhat dampened or limited. This is tied into the "no godmodding" rule. Basically, we don't want characters godmodding the world. Thus, characters cannot have powers that allow them to leave Somarium, disrupt the magic that allows Somarium to operate, access alternate dimensions, harm any of the ghost NPCs, etc.
As a general rule of thumb, characters with destructive abilities cannot destroy anything larger than 15'x15' with one spell. So something like a huge boulder or a car. Skyscrapers or other large buildings cannot be destroyed. You can make huge craters in the ground or seriously damage buildings, just don't go overboard.
We expect players to take these rules into account when writing their applications. Each character's abilities are different, and you are responsible for limiting your characters' powers as necessary. If you have any questions or need help doing this, talk to the mods and we'll be more than happy to help you figure something out.
❖ summons
Summoning creatures or spirits is, in general, not allowed in Somarium. Usually summons work by calling a creature/spirit that would only exist in the character's homeworld, and therefore they wouldn't be able to access them in Somarium.
Summons that come from within the character themselves (e.g. Persona from the Persona series) are allowed. This is also true if a summon is contained in some item like a stone (e.g. Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy XIII)
❖ learning magic
Despite canon differences, it is possible for other characters to teach each other how to use canon-set skills or magic. Just keep it realistic. No character, no matter how much of a genius, should be able to learn a skill or magic overnight.
❦ death
It is possible for characters to die in Somarium. However, due to Somarium's setting, they do not stay dead forever. Read on below for more information on character deaths within the game. Please note that all in-game deaths must be reported to the mods before continuing with one of these options.
Note: As of July 19, 2010, the following death punishments are in effect. Characters who died once before this date will be restarted at a count of 0. Those who died more than once will be restarted at a count of 1.
Immediately after dying, characters will still be playable. However, depending on the number of times they died, they will suffer one of the listed death punishments. Note: all super powers will be disabled for all of the death punishments. After the designated time period, characters will "respawn" at a random location of the player's choice. The only place they cannot respawn is out in the desert.
❖ event deaths
Some deaths are unplanned and are "accidental," and this is even more so when there is an event that could cause numerous amounts of death. That is, some plot-events may bring upon disasters or monsters upon characters and that would make death almost unavoidable for some characters. In that case, the respective punishment is less severe. So for instance, if the character had already died twice, and a death by monster occurs, they would only have to go through the second death punishment instead of the third, and even then the effects are still lessened a bit. This is also true for any characters who die under a mass murder plot.
❖ murder awareness
There are a number of characters who do kill and murder as part of their personality/character type, and after a certain point they, too, will be punished. After their third kill, the character will always feel weakened and dazed at sporadic times. They may also feel less satisfied than usual. However, that's the only effect that we will place as we also don't want to restrict such characters to the point that they could become OOC. Note: This would only affect characters who kill just for the sake of killing. Characters who kill either because they have to in order to live or under the influence are excused.
New characters and players should also take note of the player-run
Somarium Justice System, which apprehends Somni City criminals and arranges punishments on a player to player permissions basis.
❖ organizing a murder plot
Got a villain or a serial killer and want to cause a big ripple amongst the people? Go for it. Seriously, we do not mind murder plots. However, there are a few guidelines to go about that. First of all, come to us first as to whether the plot is allowed. This is only so we can tell you if players might not approve of the content or if it's a sensitive topic for the playerbase. After that, throw up a discussion post on the
somarium_ooc to promote your idea. Make sure that those who are in charge of the
Police Force also see it so you can figure out how it will be handled from their side. Always keep tabs with the Police Force since they will more than likely be involved at some point.
Once you get everything done on your side, contact us with your plan: 1) Who all is involved? (characters and players); 2) What's going to happen?; and 3) What is your default resolution? You can e-mail, PM the mod account, post a filtered entry to the mod journal (
somarium_lords), or even throw up another OOC post so everyone can see what's going on. Just make sure we know what the final plan is before playing it out. This is only so that we are at least aware of what's going on and an insurance that everyone involved is aware of what is happening. After that, you're good to go!
❦ punishments part 1
❖ first death
Those who die for the very first time will have the following options available to them:
- Going ghost. Your character can be a semi-ghost and will be restricted to the area of death. By "semi-ghost" we mean that the character will have moments of complete intangibility, and at other times will be partially solid. They will have a "jello-like" substance to them, so if they are ever in the partial-intangible stage, they will be able to touch things and other characters will also be able to feel them. During complete intangible mode, they will be able to behave like normal ghosts and pass through walls, hover a little, etc. They will be unable to control when they change from one phase to the next.
- Minor loss. Your character can lose something of minor importance to them. It can be an old memory, their favorite pair of boots, a well-loved jacket, or a stuffed animal. It does not have to be anything devastating or traumatic. Remember, this is minor.
- Combo Set 1-A. A combination of being ghost and the minor loss.
- Combo Set 1-B. A combination of either being ghost or the minor loss, plus sensory loss of your choice for a week. This means your character could lose any of their five basic senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, or touch.
Note: There is no memory loss of any kind for the first death. The effects should also only last for at most a week, and after there is only a very short recovery period after the character "respawns" back to life.
❖ second death
The consequences are naturally a little more severe. With the second death, your character will be a ghost. Like the first death, the character will not be a complete ghost, but will find that they remain in the "true ghost" phase longer. The following additional options will also occur:
- Temporary minor memory loss. Characters will forget just a few details about them and will be in a state something akin to distant amnesia. They could forget their name, names of friends and loved ones, their home, where they are, what they were doing.
- Temporary partial paralysis. Characters will lose an ability of the player's choice. This could be anything from speaking to the use of the right arm. The limb could be still be there, but it will be as if it were paralyzed.
- Other Loss. Characters will lose something important to them of a greater magnitude than the minor loss in the first death. This could be anything from a body part, to an eye, to a treasured memory. Any questions about this may be directed to the mods. This loss will be permanent unless bargained away with the Death Keeper.
- Combo Set 2-A. Character can have all three punishment effects in place, or any combination of two of the above-listed punishments.
- Combo Set 2-B. Combine one effect from the first death with either the minor memory loss or partial paralysis. This includes the option to have a loss of sensory skill.
The effects last for at most a week. Characters will feel slightly weakened for a short period of time afterward, but will be back to normal.
❦ punishments part 2
❖ third death
If your character dies for a third time, they will have the following traits:
- Complete ghost. Characters will be in a complete ghost phase and will have no moments of tangibility.
- Severe memory loss. Characters will forget major events that occurred to them, as well as important memories such as friends and loved ones. Unlike the minor memory loss, this is not limited to just the name, but to the whole person as well. The character may even forget who they are.
- Apathy. Despite the severe memory loss, characters will feel distant and cold about everything around them. It will be as if they are suffering a severe case of amnesia. It is possible for them to remember things from time to time, but it will feel very distant and detached.
- Passivity. Characters will not interact with their surroundings much, if at all. They will be very passive about things.
Unlike the other two death punishments, these effects do not wear off naturally. In order to be brought back to life, characters will have to barter with the Death Keeper. The item could be a dream, an item, or some kind of service the character will have to perform upon respawning. Should a third death occur, contact one of the mods.
❖ fourth death
Should your character die more than three times, they will have to face dire consequences. They will suffer all of the death effects and will also have to face the Death Keeper. However, instead of just bartering, they will have to give all their dreams to him and will be transformed into a Noctaere creature for a week. Upon respawning, they will be severely weakened, perhaps even crippled for a period of time.
❦ mechanics
❖ community tags
For ease of reference, Somarium utilizes the community tags on both the main and OOC communities. For the main community, the main types of tags that are used are !location (to show where the characters are), !event (used during specific events), !moon: cycle ## (for Moon Cycle based events), and character name tags.
The mods will create new tags, but players are more than welcome and are encouraged to help update entries by adding their own tags. If your character runs a shop or business, and you'd like a tag created for it, just contact the mods somehow and let us know what you'd like the tag to be.
Name order in tags is on a First Name/Last Name order. If a character canonly goes by more than one name, both will be included in the tag if possible. For example, Axis Powers Hetalia characters are listed as Country (Name). If there are multiple characters with identical names (like Alice), the format is of the following: Character (canon)
❖ posting
Logs are posted in the main community,
somarium, while all network posts are made within the journals. Refer to the
Posting Guide for more details. NOTE: The journal posts should have very limited physical interaction. If characters are in the same room, or if a log post would be impractical due to short length, then action responses are allowed. This is mostly for organization and practical purposes.
❖ canon updates
You may at any point update your character to a later point in canon. Canon updates may occur once per month, with occasional exceptions if something extremely significant happens in an ongoing canon. There are two ways canon updates can be done: a dream post or a "holding" period. More information regarding that can be found on the
Canon Update page.
❖ hiatus
Your character will be mysteriously absent for the length of your hiatus. They may have an IC justification for this (e.g. exploring), or they may simply vanish. There is also an option to have your character fall into a coma-like state rather than disappearing, if you so desire. The character's name will remain on the Dreamberry Contact List.
❖ dropped characters
Your character will completely vanish from Somarium, and their name will be removed from the Dreamberry Contact List. Everyone else will be able to check the list and see that the character has left. Characters do retain their memories of a dropped character, even if another player picks up the character again later.
❖ previously played characters
If you are applying for a character that has been previously played at the RP, by someone else, you are not responsible for knowing about what the previous incarnation of the character did. However, be aware that the other characters in the RP will retain their memories of the previous version of the character, and they will most likely comment on the change.
