I have been very very slow to post this, but this cabbie/oromo singer gave me a ride home from downtown DC the day of the 2011 earthquake, then waited patiently while I begged the Afghans across the way for cash to pay, since I had been caught out of the building with no money or house key. I was so delighted that he was game to brave the crazy

Those booming sounds I heard during the earthquake were in fact the walls in the stairwell cracking. Each level for several levels has an long horizontal crack on the outside wall, and places where the wallboard or plaster or whatever that is was popped out and ejected to the floor
