Thoughts: Initial Responses to Lost

As we approach the end of season one of Lost (a bittersweet time, do doubt...hah), I'm just curious to know when and how everyone picked up on the series. Did you like it initially? How devoted are you to this fandom? What kept/keeps you watching? Other thoughts ( Read more... )

I started watching for Dom. It's really as simple as that. I had a huge crush on him from the LOTR Appendices and when my best friend told me he had a new show out, I decided to tune in, although I hated the fact that Matthew Fox was on since I still harbored a hatred of him from "Pof5". What's funny is that the night the pilot first aired I almost decided to watch the premiere of "Hawaii" instead and catch Lost later, heh. But I was COMPLETELY blown away by the pilot, unlike anything I'd ever seen, even the pilot of The X-Files. I sat with my mouth hanging open, and when the hour was over I couldn't wait until the next episode. So I was hooked from the start. I didn't get into the fandom until around November, when I started hanging out on the ABC message boards. Then I decided I wanted to get back into fanfic and since the J/K/S triangle intrigued me so much, I had to give it a go. On top of all this, I love seeing this fandom grow and knowing that I'm apart of it at its beginning stages. I didn't get into the fandom side of The X- ( ... )

Hawaii? O___o Is that even on anymore? I refuse to watch shows densely named after a city: i.e. Hawaii, Vegas, Dallas, Chicago, Seattle, Ft. Worth, Jakarta, Sao Paolo...hahah.

Why not as big as Jossverse, I ask. Some people should get off the island on Michael's raft and then have their own "back to civilization" sitcom spinoff. The tagline would be "Castaways...Meet Civilization" and cellphone, radio, and computer jokes would be common. Or Sayid and Shannon could have their own soap.

So what was so bad about Foxy in Pof5, anyway? I think I was too young to care about that show, but I do remember it. I thought the other guy on that show was a hottie, tho'...sad to say I don't really recall Foxy.

No, Hawaii's cancelled. I guess I made the right choice, eh? *snerk*

Oh, I guess I came off wrong--I'd LOVE it if the Lost fandom got as big as Buffy. I do think JJverse has the potential to become the next Jossverse. I mean, ff.net already has, like, 700 Lost fics and it hasn't even been on a year.

I hated Foxy on Pof5 because HE WHINED CONSTANTLY. Everyone whined constantly on that show, actually, which is why I stopped watching. I still absolutely detest Neve Campbell. But Charlie (Foxy) had floppy hair and whined about cancer and his love life and it absolutely drove me batshit. So when I saw that he was gonna be on Lost, I was all Nooooo, no Matt Fox EVER AGAIN. But I now have le ubercrush on him (as well as Josh), so things change, heh. And it helps that he's sans floppy hair now ;p

You know, it's funny, I initially really wasn't into Lost at all. I started watching it because I watched Alias, but I missed both parts of the pilot episode and never went back to rewatch them until later, so I really had no idea of what was going on. I found Tabula Rasa to be kind of boring (I really wasn't into Kate at the time, Walkabout to be overly intense, and I didn't end up watching House of the Rising Sun, so...I wasn't exactly blown away with this show at first ( ... )

Haha, although I could tell Sawyer and Charlie apart, I do agree--sometimes people with the same general physical characteristics are hard to distinguish.

I liked the characteryness of it. People are my favorite part of any book or movie, so I like stories that are mostly about people and how they interact. That explains why I think Love Actually is so cute.

Yup, this Lost-Alias bond is really netting some new viewers for both shows, I think. Good one, ABC, good one.

Yes. Hotties. Always nice.

Oh, no, I totally agree with you on the whole character thing...the big cast is my favorite part of the show, it just kind of threw me off initially...I had a better grip on everyone, I think, after I went back and watched the pilot episode ("Sayid worked for the Iraqi guard? Kate's a convict? Charlie's a junkie? Boone and Shannon are brother and sister?)

I'm a little bit obsessed with Love Actually. I've kind of seen it an obscene amount of times...

And, um, in addition to not being able to tell Charlie and Sawyer apart, I couldn't figure out when the scene was a flashback and when it was taking place in real time. Which I don't understand, because this concept of when they're not on the island, it's a FLASHBACK really shouldn't be that hard to grasp.

I've seen...cucumbers who are more alert than I am.

Ha! I was onboard from second one. It was my most-anticipated show of the season, given the cast (Foxy! and yeah, Dom & Navi too), the premise, and JJ Abrams ( ... )

Er, that is, the first second -- not the second episode. It was D-day until the pilot aired! ;-)

I heard about it because I am a diehard reader of Entertainment Weekly. They have a season preview in the fall, and there it was. Dom Monaghan and -- realize that I had just recently seen The English Patient and was thinking, my god, that man is gorgeous -- Naveen Andrews in one show. And one that was oddly similar to Lord of the Flies, one of my all time favorite books. I was skeptical at first. I had to tape the first few episodes and I watched them all at once. After that, I started rearranging my schedule ( ... )

I saw commercials for it on TV and thought "OMGDOMSQUEE!!!!MUSTWATCH!!11!!" but, it was Wednesday nights at 7 and damn, I had a committment then and was never home. So I didn't watch (I'm going to get sporked for this, aren't I?) UNTIL my brother came home for winter break in december (yes, december) with episodes 1-11 on his laptop, dvd quality, no commercials. I wasn't even going to watch then, but he was watching and I was sitting there and it was Kate's first ep, number 3, and I got hooked. Honestly, watching Sawyer shoot that guy in the lungs and I was gibbering and holy shit ( ... )

DUDE! I love the icon. I'm sitting in a room by myself, laughing like an idiot.

And the good ship Charlie Loves Babymama sails on... And on, and on. I swear, if it ever sinks, I'll go mad.

I agree! Sawyer taking the gun to shoot the Marshall was incredibly shocking and harsh. Actually, I'm glad you brought it up because it just made me attribute that to Sawyer's character. He has empathy for a man in a losing situation with only one way out. It also connects with the misinformed murder of Hibbs, whether or not the creators originally indended that.
