Cain stuck his head into the dining room. He had intercepted the courier on his way back from the shed that morning, thankfully, and was able to pull out the report from Ahamo. DG was staring at the list from her mother - again - and he wanted to laugh at the nodding of her head as she read.
"Hey!" DG looked up from the pages and her eyes narrowed as Cain inclined his head. "C'mere," he said, pushing off the wall and stepping back in the doorway. DG dropped the pages to the table and pushed the chair back.
"What?"
"Will you just come with me?" Cain huffed as she reached his side. He turned toward the front door of the palace and pulled her along.
"Where are we going?" DG asked, giving him a look.
"It's a nice day, Princess," Cain said with exasperation, continuing to pull her toward the door. They hadn't had a walk in a while - not since leaving Central City - and he was trying to find the best way to tell her that he’d be leaving.
Part of him wondered why they'd stayed at Finaqua so long, especially now. It wasn't like they were actually on a honeymoon or anything. For the amount of work getting done, it could not get done just the same in the city. Though, he did have to admit that it was kind of nice to have time to themselves.
Not that he'd been thinking about it, of course.
Odd as it was, he was actually enjoying this life with DG. There were no surprises, no expectations; just two people in a strange land, muddling through.
Except for that being married-issue. Really, though, it wasn't so bad, he realized.
At least they were friends. That would have been really awkward.
The two of them stepped out into the bright, dual-sunlight of the Southern Guild and Cain waved toward the lake. It had been almost two weeks since their morning chopping wood. That was the closest they'd come to talking since the city, and Cain realized he'd missed it.
Even though he didn't understand half of what she was saying, Cain liked hearing about the other side. He'd imagined living there - well, trying to - now and then. He'd seen the sketches of DG's house on the Other Side, and had almost asked her once if they could go see it.
But, going back would just raise a whole knew set of questions, he knew, based on the stories of this Gulch-fellow. Really, Cain just wanted to meet the man who thought he could control his wife.
His wife.
It was becoming much less odd to think of DG in that way, Cain found. Of course, if it hadn't been for the jar, would DG be married by now? Would she have found some young man to spend her life with? Cain did feel party responsible for taking away her chance to find out - regardless of his knowledge of the jar.
Hearing DG's sigh as they moved down the path toward the gazebo, Cain smiled. She hated silence, and he knew it. DG wrapped her arms around herself as the breeze picked up. Even though it was warm, she had a chill. Glancing up at the mountains, DG stopped and dropped her shoulders.
"I'm sorry, okay." Cain blinked and turned toward her. "I'm not trying to piss her off, y'know," DG continued, keeping her eyes on the ground in front of her. Cain turned and started laughing, continuing on down the path.
"What's so funny?" DG asked with a frown, chasing after him.
"You thought I brought you out here to yell at you? Kiddo," Cain laughed again, shaking his head.
"Well, she won't yell at me, so I figure she cornered you to give you some 'keep her in line or else' speech," DG huffed.
"What makes you think anyone thinks I have any say in your behavior, Kid?" Cain turned to her and smiled. When DG looked away, Cain leaned down. "Do I have say in your behavior?" he asked with a grin.
"Pssh," DG grimaced. "In your dreams."
