It is completely not obvious at all from my previous post on this subject, but a large part of my annoyance comes not at the linking of what some people call one-shots, but rather when authors provide links between parts of multi-chapter stories on lj. This is the instance when I find not being linked by ?mode=reply the most obnoxious and annoying ( Read more... )

I selected: When I post fanfiction I ask for feedback and I dislike fanfiction links with ?mode=reply appended because I can't see comments but the truth is sometimes I remember to encourage feedback and sometimes I don't. I kind of feel like on LJ, with the built in comment feature, asking or reminding or encouraging people to leave feedback is redundant. The method is already there if they are so inclined, anything beyong that feels like playing whack-a-mole with the feedback me please!

I do, however, usually put something on the web posted version of the story that says something like : if you have comments or questions, please contact me at maygra @ bellsouth.net or leave a comment in my my livejournal with the html link going back whatever public lj entry I made regarding the story ( ... )

I kind of feel like on LJ, with the built in comment feature, asking or reminding or encouraging people to leave feedback is redundant. Well, I had been functioning under the assumption that there was a general consensus that "asking for feedback" was acceptable fannish behavior, but then several people said they felt like ?mode=reply was too much asking for feedback, and I'm trying to figure out if 'asking for feedback' is as acceptable as I thought it was. It seems as if, perhaps, with the advent of LJ, it is less acceptable than it used to be.

I do, however, usually put something on the web posted version of the story[…]But even then I don't use the ?mode=reply format, because like a lot of people, I find it annoying and to much like I'm being treated like an idiot child -- because seriously, if I've got something to say? I'll find a way to say it. I have to tell you, at that point, you would lose my comment. I already clicked on your link to say something to you, but now you want me to click again to comment to you. If I have to ( ... )

I already clicked on your link to say something to you, but now you want me to click again to comment to you. Uhm, no. I post simultaneously to lj and my website. If you are reading a story on LJ, you can comment in the same post you read from -- just like any other LJ story ( ... )

Uhm, no. I post simultaneously to lj and my website. If you are reading a story on LJ, you can comment in the same post you read from -- just like any other LJ story

I was referring specifically to your website. I understood you to say that when you post the story on your website, you post a link at the bottom to a page on LJ with link text indicating that it is a method to post a comment, but this link is not ?mode=reply. So, after clicking on the link on your website, I get to the lj page and have to click again to post a comment. That's what I meant.

If you read a story that you really like (let's put aside the ones we wouldn't comment on anyway) and your reading of that story and your enjoyment of it is shut down because I didn't use the ?mode=reply command which has nothing to do with how much you liked the story so that you can't be bothered to click a link to leave a comment, then okay.I didn't say that I now hate the story because the author has presented me with two links to leave a comment. I'm saying that I enjoyed the ( ... )

You know, somehow I hadn't thought in terms of wips. While I'd much rather have comments available before I hit send on my own feedback, that's only true for one shots and final posts of wips. For the earlier parts...honestly, I couldn't care less what other people are saying. :)

And...what does asking for feedback mean? I mean, unless I disable comments, I'm pretty much saying "hey! Tell me you liked it!" even though I never literally ask for feedback.

BTW...even though I've responded to your posts about this issue, this isn't actually a hot button issue for me. If the reply box is up, I just erase the ending from the URL and carry on...all without crying. :)

I meant literally asking for feedback, either in the story headers or by, when reposting to a website, including an e-mail address on the story page itself (as opposed to just somewhere on website) or a link to lj where people can post comments.

My feeling is, posting with comments enabled on LJ is neutral behavior, since it's an artifact of the software.

See, to me, posting an e-mail at the bottom of the story page or especially a link to the lj comment page is totally a request for feedback, one on par with saying in the headers Please leave feedback. And I thought that the fandom norm was that it's okay to say, "Please to be giving of the feedback," but since so many people are objecting to ?mode=reply on the basis of "it is too much asking for feedback" I am wondering if I misunderstood the norm, and that is what I'm trying to find out.

I don't post fanfic much anymore, but I do rec a great deal on del.icio.us and I usually try to keep URLs as clean as possible--especially since I use a Greasemonkey plugin to tell me if I've already bookmarked a story, and the plugin is URL specific. If a fanfic is at http://authorname.livejournal.com/101010.html, I just want that to be the URL I bookmark--otherwise I end up with ?style=mine and ?style=light and ?mode=reply copies of the same story. That's also how I link if I'm linking one of my stories to someone else and it seems cleaner to me.

(Although to be honest, I don't think I've seen ?style=light used outside of metafandom and I don't think a lot of people know about it--I've almost never had to strip ?style=light from a URL when I bookmark, and I have almost 1500 fanfic/meta links on del.icio.us at this point ( ... )

I knew I was forgetting a set of options when I made the poll. Other people had brought up the bookmarking issue, which is a legitimate issue that I don't care about it. (Which sounds more dismissive than I intend it to be, but what I mean is, I understand the issue, I understand that the issue is important to you, but it is less important to me than being able to download quickly on dial up and not seeing someone's unreadable personal lj style.)

In my answer choice I said I ask for feedback when I post my stories, because that seemed the most fitting choice, but I don't literally ask for, or even mention, FB in my story headers or author notes at all. I do post stories with the comments turned on, which qualifies as asking for feedback in my mind.

I meant a literal request for feedback. Comments on is the default software behavior on LJ. I will have to clarify on the post, since you are the second person to make that remark.
