It is completely not obvious at all from my
previous post on this subject, but a large part of my annoyance comes not at the linking of what some people call one-shots, but rather when authors provide links between parts of multi-chapter stories on lj. This is the instance when I find not being linked by ?mode=reply the most obnoxious and annoying, as I generally read such stories as finished works and other people's comments are slowing me down in my quest to get to The End. (Seriously, the only WIPs I'm reading are ones that are sequels to finished, chaptered works.)
Do the people who dislike ?mode=reply because it means they can't see other people's comments find this case to be the same or different than when linking to one-shots?
Also, I have to confess that I don't understand the 'pressure' or the 'begging' that people say they feel when they see a story posted as ?mode=reply. I'm not saying that I don't understand that ?mode=reply is (or is easily interpreted as) an attempt to get people to give feedback. I'm saying I don't understand when or why asking for feedback is considered uncouth, and how ?mode=reply differs from putting your e-mail at the bottom of a story or an archive which provides for comments.
Like, holding your story hostage feedback is something I dislike because it is a demand of payment: I will not participate in this community if it doesn't give me sufficient egoboo. But it is common community practice to ask for feedback.
Or is it?
By, "I Request Feedback" I do not mean "I leave comments on when I post a story in LJ." I mean something more than that.
