I mean, not that I think killing them all is a good response, but at what point do you stop going "I understand your ignorance and fear is making you hate us, so I'll just patiently explain - again - why you shouldn't while you try and kill me" - and when do you actually, you know, start fighting back? Also meant to add: If the governments hadn't done what they did, I truly believe that Erik would have had the chance to collect himself and lower his adrenaline, as others have pointed out above, and ultimately could have just loped after Charles and returned to the mansion and they could have regrouped from there. I don't think he has the wherewithal to be a leader of his own mutant faction - he does it because he's running on raw emotions, and then by the time he isn't, the damage has already been done.
