So I am faced with a dilemma. Continue to look for work here while working at a retail place (assuming I can find one), or call up my old boss at the veterinary hospital and ask for my job back, and move back home. And I need to make this decision very soon, as my bank account is dangerously low ( Read more... )

I suggest you call your old boss and ask if she could use the help - that should give you a feel about if going back there to work is really an option. If she says yes, explain your situation, try to find work in the SLO area, and if that doesn't pan out, then at least you have an established fall-back. If, on the other hand, she doesn't need another pair of hands right now, it's best to know in advance of complete desperation.

I'm sorry, job hunting sucks.

She pretty much can always use the help. We're always short staffed, it seems. But she does like to have schedules written put in three month intervals, so I should at least check in with that I suppose.

Blah. Why must we work to live? It's spooty.

I think working/living at home would be a great way to save money. It can just be a temporary thing (don't tell the veterinary hospital that, though). You can save money for a year or so, still be working in your chosen career (it's bad to temp or take a break from that for long periods of time...makes your resume look spotty), and while you're doing that you keep looking for the job you REALLY want. It'll give you time you need, plus a cushion of saved money, plus you'll be using that time building your resume in a positive way.

Working just to pay the bills is a slippery slope. You end up working your ass off, just to hang on to an apartment. If you have the opportunity to go home and live cheaply and save a bunch of money, do it! It's a great way out of a trap, & it'll only work while you're young and your mom will offer you a place.

Well, if I move back it wouldn't be with my mom. She doesn't have the space for me and I can't stand the cigarette smoke :/ So I'd still be working for the rent, but since Matt would be with me it would be really cheap.

I think part of what makes me hesitate about going back only to eventually leave again is that my boss is more than just a boss to me, and I don't want to feel like I'm just using her, you know? But I'm not really sure what I want to do anymore, so I feel stuck.

Blah.

It's almost Christmas time... so there should be a lot of seasonal jobs that can carry you through two months of work. Consider working for a mall (Kohls, Starbucks, Hot Topic) or ask your friends if they can recommend you at their workplace.

I've gotten some desperate jobs by asking my friends for recommendations. Gary started working for AMC when my friend's mother recommended him. I also got a job working as a health care assistant because a friend recommended me for the position. Friends are your greatest allies right now... so call them all up and ask for help.

Have you also considered volunteering for a local humane society or veterinary clinic to earn some extra bonus points with the staff members?

Yeah, I've been applying to a bunch of seasonal places, and so far haven't heard back from any of them. And I've been going around asking the clinics around here if they need any volunteers, but none do at the moment. *sigh* Feelin' pretty backed into a corner, here.

12 hours O.o;;

That's 3-4 days a week right?

Nope. 5-6 days a week. She's the only vet hospital up there, so it's insanely busy and we end up working almost constantly. Saying it was exhausting doesn't cover it.

That's too much! Can't you ask for a normal schedule. I mean if she's hurting for help so much, he won't turn you don't even if you set conditions.

Not really no. The nature of the job is essentially "work until you're done." The hospital itself is only open 9am-6pm, and we're technically supposed to be there a half hour before and after that. But we generally end up with a few emergencies or urgent appointments which keep us there til 8 or 9pm, and we can't really bail out on those.
