Chapter 28
(Author's Note: This takes place in the middle of the last chapter, but I thought it would add a bit more drama if I told the scene from Jack's perspective.)
ZeldaQueen: In other words, you wanted to write about Jack going on about how much he loves you your avatar and couldn't go on in life if you died. Lovely
Jack
I had turned from my enemy long enough to see a huge, rogue wave wash aboard deck, sweeping Kate with it.
ZeldaQueen: You know, the movie showed that it was really chaotic and crammed full of pirates on the Pearl. I still find it hard to believe that that very minute Jack just happened to see Kate go overboard in the nick of time
I felt my heart freeze in mid-beat, my stomach and throat tie themselves into knots, and my eyes widen as she was forced overboard. I turned to the creature with whom I was fighting, quickly plunged my cutlass into its chest, and hurried down to the main deck.
ZeldaQueen: He then leaped overboard in a stunning display of stupidity and drowned. The end!
"Jack!" cried Hector from the helm. "Where are ye going?!"
ZeldaQueen: (Barbossa) "And why am I talking in Ye Olde Butchered Englishe?"
"Kate's been thrown overboard!" I called back.
ZeldaQueen: (Jack) "I'm of to give whoever did that a medal"
His eyes widened, but he had no time to reply as another one of the nightmarish enemy crew moved to strike.
ZeldaQueen: And I see that Jack is still sharing the Sue's limited vocabulary
He turned to counter it, and I left him to it. I hurried to the railing and climbed atop it using a nearby line. Beneath the haul, the water swirled violently as the maelstrom intensified. I could not see my wife below the churning waves, yet I knew that she could not have been anywhere else, not with the strength of the rogue wave.
ZeldaQueen: Because it's not like it's possible to get tangled up in some lines as you're being dragged overboard, or caught amongst some barrels or grabbed by someone else
"Captain! What are you doing?" Gibbs shouted.
"Kate's down there!" I shouted in return. "I have to get her!"
"But it's suicide!"
"I can't live without her!" I cried. "I love her!"
ZeldaQueen: You know, one of the things I really liked about the new movie that came out was how we see Jack Sparrow act around a woman who he really does love, or did really love at one point. He was kind to Angelica and tried to take care of her, but he still didn't go completely soppy around her. You know, like Jack is doing here
Before Gibbs could protest any further, I dived headlong into the vehement waves, suddenly overcome with an icy rush of swirling white foam that was nigh impossible to see through.
ZeldaQueen: So nigh impossible, in fact, that he failed to see the heavy piece of debris floating around. He promptly brained himself on it and drowned
I looked about until I heard my lungs screaming, and then I surfaced, and dived again.
My heart was pounding as I searched in vain for Katherine. What if I never find her? What if I don't find her in time? What if...?
ZeldaQueen: - Barbie had a hand grenade?
I rebuked myself silently for such pessimism as I struggled against the powerful current. Had I not been accustomed to it, the saltwater would have stung my eyes. I felt my body being pulled towards the maelstrom's center, and I felt my limbs growing numb and heavy with exhaustion as I surfaced for more air. Above me, the storm and battle raged, cannonfire competing with the roar of thunder. The rain was bombarding the sea with such violence that it only seemed to contribute to the maelstrom's anger.
ZeldaQueen: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know how this works. Despite all odds, you rescue the chick instead of drowning with her
I felt something rather warm brush against my hand.
ZeldaQueen: ...Apparently, Jack was really scared there
I dived beneath the waves again and found that Katherine was only mere inches from me. I reached out for her, finally catching her by the hand just as we were swept towards the whirlpool. I pulled her towards me and, carrying her weight as well as my own, struggled towards the haul of the Pearl.
ZeldaQueen: And pray tell, how was he going to lug her carcass up there? It's not like climbing up on one's own was that easy in a storm. Add one limp body to the equation, and it would be quite difficult
I made it just as the water grew more violent, and Gibbs immediately tossed a line over the side. I grabbed a hold of it, frightened that I would lose my grip due to the exhaustion, but by some stroke of luck I made it to the deck.
ZeldaQueen: Luck to you maybe. You're not reading this thing
I laid Kate down upon it, placing my hand on her wrist. There was a very weak pulse. I placed my head on her breast, hearing no breaths flowing through her lungs.
ZeldaQueen: Or you could just say "She wasn't breathing". Good way to not sound totally pretentious there
"Oh God," I breathed as I opened her mouth and laid my own upon hers.
ZeldaQueen: *groans* Oh that's just fantastic! Now we get this cliche!
I exhaled into her mouth the very breath that she needed, my own breath. This was in vain. I attempted it again. Just as before, it was in vain. I tried thrice more without success.
ZeldaQueen: Three shall be the number. Neither one more, nor one less. Two is too few. Four is too many. Five is way out
"Dammit, Kate!" I cried. "Don't die! Don't die on me!"
ZeldaQueen: Don't even bother. If it's in the name of drama, she'll do whatever the flip she pleases
I pressed on her chest, placing all my weight into my hands, then backed off slightly, and then pressed again. I attempted this several moments; I could feel eyes on my back, but I paid them no heed as I continued the attempts to save my wife's life.
ZeldaQueen: Hey, who wants to bet that Gethesemane is going to ignore or be unaware of the unpleasant details of CPR, like how you have to break the ribs usually or that in most cases, the victim vomits upon waking up?
Suddenly, she stirred and turned over on her side, coughing violently as water spewed forth from her lungs. I breathed a sigh of relief and embraced her tightly. She looked up at me, looking disconcerted.
ZeldaQueen: (Kate) "What have you been eating? Your breath is nasty!"
"Jack...?"
"Oh, thank God. I thought I'd lost you," I whispered.
ZeldaQueen: I guess we thank Satan for her safe return
"Lost me?"
"You were thrown overboard by a rogue wave," said Gibbs from behind me. "The captain here dived in and saved you just before you were sucked into the maelstrom."
ZeldaQueen: (Kate) "But then I clicked my heels together three times and said 'There's no place like the Caribbean'. And they sent me home! Oh Auntie Em!"
She removed herself gently from my arms, looking about the carnage-strewn deck. "Where's Calypso?"
I shrugged. "Lost sight of her."
ZeldaQueen: I love how calm he is with the knowledge that an insane and vengeful goddess is just out there wandering around
She jumped to her feet. "I have to find her! She must die today or she will escape punishment as she has for the last century!"
I protested, yet she ran off into the melee. I rose to my feet as well and pursued her until we came to a stop at the figurehead.
"She's not here," she panted. "Where is she?"
ZeldaQueen: Maybe she left? Or went to get someone who would release her? Oh, let's face the facts here. Gethesemane has made Calypso about as cunning as a string bean
I looked about, and found that she was nowhere to be seen. Kate cursed.
"We have to find her," she said as she looked at me. "It's a matter of life and death."
I stared at her. "What?"
"She and my uncle made a bargain. She would return him to life if he agreed to release her...so that she could kill me."
ZeldaQueen: Oh, really? Whatever happened to saving Jones and freeing the ocean and avenging Sirena and your Sue spawns? Now it's all about saving your own skin?
"They were plotting to kill you?" I demanded, angered by the betrayal.
Hector had betrayed me more times than I dared to count, but when that betrayal meant Kate's life, that infuriated me.
ZeldaQueen: Because stealing the Pearl? That's nothing compared to Kate as far as Jack's concerned! Bite me, Gethesemane
"Uncle didn't know about her reasons for wanting him to release her until she told him recently. He was angry at her, so he threw her in the brig. But she won't rest, she won't stop, until she kills me or I kill her."
ZeldaQueen: That still doesn't answer the question of why she told him at all. Apparently vengeful pagan goddesses are pretty honest when it comes to fine print
There was a determination in her voice that offered no room for protest, but I was angry enough myself not to do so.
She looked at me with dark anger in her eyes. "She'll be the one to die. Not me."
ZeldaQueen: We know. That's the way all of Gethesemane's fics turn out. Why would this one be any different?
