Pie

I'm going to a Supernatural S7 marathon at redteekal's this afternoon and thought, what could be more appropriate to take to a Supernatural viewing than a pie? (Other than perhaps ( 7x10 spoiler )

It was pretty good! I'll try making the crust from scratch next time.

I was going to write "I can't believe your mother said that" but on reflection it was all too believable. Mothers!

It looks like a magnificent pie.

She seems to like to preserve an aura of mystery about pie making. If I suggest that she does make one, though, it's always "It's too hot to make the crust" or "Peaches are too expensive" (even when they aren't)!

She would probably sooner jump off a cliff than serve a pie with a store-bought crust, but I figured any pie was better than a hypothetical better pie that never actually gets made! I think I've guilted her into making one of hers for Christmas, so I'll pay attention to the details and try to replicate them next time round.

Beautiful! A Christmas peach pie! There's a novelty I couldn't have imagined, really. :)

Making a pie is one thing, but where'd you get decent peaches?? I haven't had a peach worth eating in years, they pick them so green. We live a long, long way from peach territory. I remember peaches from my childhood, of course, where they trucked them up north straight from Georgia in lugs and we ate them as fast as we could, making peach jam and pie along the way.

Plenty of stone fruit is available here this time of year: peaches, nectarines, some plums and apricots. It's compensation for the summer heat!

Oh, and even though my mom taught me to cook eons ago, I still can't make her pot roast and gravy. And she's long gone. *sigh*

It's occurred to me that I should get my mother to write down instructions for some of her dishes that I'll probably never want to make myself while I can eat them occasionally at her house, but will want to know how to do after she's gone. They'd probably never be the same, though, so maybe it's better to consign them to memory.
