I suppose it's a reflection on me that my reactions to that advertisement were divided in half between musings on culture, inequality, and progress similar to yours, and a simple wince of "Shit, that has to sting".
I wonder about how women 50 years ago thought about this. I'm not anti-male, but I can see how it would be easy for a man in the 1950's to accept that he was superior and women were meant to serve him. After all, aren't there plenty of men with this mentality/fantasy today? But it's the women I wish I understood. Did they just accept this as the way things are? Were they unhappy? Seeing the glistening housewife-posing-with-washing-machine ads, it's hard to tell.
