This sadly sums up all the reasons why I am compelled to watch this show--I desperately need to see Dean Winchester find his self-worth, though I am pretty sure he will never get there...

Oh yes. And sometimes he takes a few steps forward and we all cheer, but then something will happen and back he goes into self-loathing territory. :(

Congratulations, woman, you've totally captured the one aspect of Dean that breaks my heart every single time. Sam sees how worthy Dean is. We see it. Only the man himself fails to see it.

Dean is not a bad seed. He was just planted in bad soil.

. . . oh, go ahead and make me cry, why don't you?

I was watching the ep, watching Dean with his ice pack in obvious pain, and thinking, 'Cas is fully fired-up now, why doesn't he heal him?' And then Cas reaches out and offers and I'm thinking, 'yep, good.'

And then Dean won't let him. And says he 'had it coming'.

I kind of missed the rest of the ep and had to go back and rewatch it because I was too busy trying to pick up all the pieces of my broken heart! My mind went off on a tangent about Dean's well-known lack of self-worth, but I kept coming back to the phrasing: 'had it coming', which just smacks of victim blaming. And out comes this story, which, to be honest, could've been tighter and more succinct, but it was a bit of an emotional reaction!

go ahead and make me cry, why don't you?
If it's any consolation, I was crying too!

...it's fine, I didn't need my heart anyway. That is a killer last line. ♥

Thanks! I'm glad that last line worked. I wanted to tie the story back in to the episode title. My heart constantly breaks over Dean. Sam too, but mostly Dean.

That was just beautiful. I'd love to see the day Dean recognises how awesome he is, but what are the odds of it actually happening?

I second everyone else's comments about your utterly perfect last line.

Me too. I'm always so happy when he takes a few steps forward, when we see some character growth. But then something always seems to happen that knocks him back down into self-loathing territory. It's heartbreaking.

I'm so glad the last line worked! :)
