Whaling is still done these days.  So, what are whales used for?  The oil that was rendered from their bodies was replaced with petroleum (so oil saved the whale!) but is there any real need to hunt whales?

And I got The Communist Manifesto for my Kindle.  XD  I've wanted to read it to satisfy my curiosity.  And why I'm thinking about it, there is

IIRC, whale meat is still eaten in Japan, though I could be misremembering/misinformed. Not that anyone particularly needs to eat whale, but that is one of its possible current uses.

Really though, at the rate it's going, we could definitely use a non-petrol, non-whale, non-food alternative energy. Probably non-coal as well, since I rather like being able to see off into the distance.
