It is better to let the sweat just drip off if at all possible.
However sweat makes it difficult to see and it even stings when it hits your eyes.
Sweat can cause problems maintaining or achieveing a pose.
It gets down right slippery.
The mats can get dangerously slick.
And it can be really nasty in a class.
I know I have had moments in teh past where I would have been a lot happier if the person next to me would wipe their sweat off.
They stand and were splashing when switching poses or just standing there in pose dripping.
I think your teacher is doing well by you and your class.
Making sure you re-hydrate and getting people to wipe off the sweat before you get bothered by someone sweat or them by your sweat.
Juts enjoy the class and if you want to just sweat it out with not wiping - do a hot practice at home on your own?

Thanks for the input. :) For what it's worth though, I really don't think my sweat would inconvenience anyone else. The classes are limited to 10 students and the room is big enough that we all have plenty of room, so I don't think it would be a problem. And we use towels instead of yoga mats, so it wasn't slippery.

These are my thoughts on sweat and water after three years of having a hot yoga practice: you don't want to wipe the sweat because that's what's keeping you cool because the evaporating sweat helps to regulate your body temperature (as is always the case when you're sweating). It's also a waste of time because you're going to start sweating again immediate. Really, wiping your sweat is an exercise in futility ( ... )

After almost 2 years of practice, i only wipe sweat when I need my hands for holding a pose, mainly because it feels like wasted effort.

I hate when the class is so crowded that the person next to me splashes on me. My studio never turns anyone away, so sometimes we're literally mat to mat.

yuk.

I practice and teach in a hot room regularly.

I only wipe sweat from my forehead because it drips into my face and stings my eyes. I hate that. Sometimes I'll wipe sweat away if I know I have to do an arm balance like crow. I've seen too many people tumble over because they slip off their arms. Sometimes I'll discreetly wipe it away from my chest (sweat dripping down into breasts is SO uncomfortable!) but for the most part I leave it alone. If I concentrated too much on where I'm sweating, it takes me out of the practice.

I usually just wipe my face and sometimes between my breasts. Maybe once during class I'll wipe off my arms.

What really helped me was just mentally saying to myself, "It feels good to sweat. I like how this feels. My body's releasing all this," and soon I didn't even notice it anymore.
