Yeh. I currently have a paid account, and I will be letting that lapse back into an unpaid one in the near future (think I've paid till sept). Its the "it's wrong if we say is wrong" attitude that is bothering me. And it doesn't look like that will be changing soon.
I really don't believe there is a place in existence (except in your own head, with your own views alone) where the attitude 'it's wrong if we say its wrong' isn't in existence.
However in the case of a contract where I pay money for a service, its wrong becase we say its wrong isn't good enough. It's wrong because it goes against our carefully worded terms of service which outline exactly what you can and can't do is a different matter, and is the norm virtually everywhere except here at the moment. Its a contract pure and simple, and if the contract is sufficiently unclear that I do not know where I'm allowed to tread until after I've had my account taken away, then that is a huge problem.
Nice clear ToS allow me to decide whether I want to be giving my money to this company. Ambiguous ToS means I can't make that decision. So I'll assume that I don't, and let my account lapse.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you am facing this situation in a similar way. I've always had a plain, unpaid account, and I certainly don't plan to upgrade. Deliberation is good. Like you, I may move if it looks like it's time.
To reference another old poem:
"Be not the first by whom the new is tried, Nor last to leave the old behind."
I'd actually quite like a paid account. I use my LJ enough that it would be worth it. But I'm not sure I want to support them at this time, so it's really a bit frustrating.
Good reference, I think sometimes it is good to be the first to try something new (if someone wasn't first then we'd never get ANYWHERE,) but it's not good to jump into something head first. Nor is it good to blindly follow the emotions of the time. It'd be easy to go RAHHH! 6apart is evil! I am going to moove my LJ! RAW!!! But I don't want to, and I'm not sure it'd do much good so...
At any rate, yeah. Slow but stead is, at least in this case, the best.
I have a free account with ads, but feel superior because my Firefox add-on means I never see them, but I guess Six Apart still get paid by sponsors for this. Maybe I'll switch.
And I love your photo. Wish Manchester was a bit nearer to home...
*wake up snort* huh? Wha?? Wow okay so something is going on here and I am totally clueless. I took a sabatticle to get some personal things done and when I come back I hear this.
Oh, on a tangent... welcome to lrpdrabbles!blackcurrantsSeptember 28 2007, 12:17:26 UTC
I just approved you into the community, so welcome! Please tag your posts with the name of the system you're writing about, and the characters in the stories. Please paste up FOIP warnings,(eg "this is background, but FOIP regarding my character's mindset re: natives") Please don't post anything so FOIP it would actually break the system/our heads, and pretty please use LJ cuts for all stories.
We encourage constructive comments, whether it's a 'that made me laugh! yay!' or a 'that opening paragraph was especially well written, the rhythm blew me away'. Again, welcome, and I hope you have fun. I look forward to reading your fic!

Or words to that effect.
