The horror is when the horror goes away anonymous April 25 2011, 18:54:26 UTC
The thing is, even with the best intentions, young justice is a team of very young children, being exposed to attempted assasinations, torture, murder, extreme body mutilation, and just generally nasty things. And there's a reason we try to shield children from that. We form our expectations of the world based on experiences. Adults who go into limes of work that deal with those things (ideally) have a background that allows them to believe in justice and the goodness of the world, even when exposed to the evidence to the contary ( ... )

The first red flag was Wally. Barry had brought him with to the lab where he had been working on some cold case files until an officer walked in.

"We've got a bad one, Allen." The officer grimaced as he tossed a folder onto Barry's desk. "Triple homicide."

Barry glanced at his nephew, who appeared to be engrossed in his chemistry homework. "On my way."

When he got back an hour later with the samples to analyze, Wally had abandoned his homework to look at the file that had been left. Barry winced as he realized it contained photos of the bloodbath he had just left.

He shouldn't have left the file with the boy. His young, curious nephew, who definitely wasn't ready for this kind of thing yet. Who was still staring at the photos in shock. Was he traumatized? Would he need therapy? Oh, Iris was going to kill him for letting Wally get exposed to-

Was Wally taking notes"Uh ( ... )

Barry had seen a lot of dead bodies in his years helping the police. These ones, he knew from experience, were still going to give him nightmares.

Wally was... just taking notes. He seemed fine.

Barry looked at the file again. It could wait.

"Come on, kid. Let's- let's go get some ice cream."

After a long conversation of sometimes bad things happens and it might take a while to sink ins and if you ever need to talks, Barry sighed. Wally still had that look of polite bafflement, and Barry was concerned.

What am I missing?

Stupid character limit.

Polite bafflement is a good reaction, I love that description. But I love everything in this fill so far, so that may not be much of a shock. :D This is so, so, so, such a phenomenal start, anon.

The next flag was Megan. In the process of working with the Martian Manhunter, Batman had learned that J’onn -and presumably M’gann as well-tended to react strongly to others’ pain. The incident in Bialya came to mind.

Thus, when the team had later told him about chasing a villain through the emergency ward of a Gotham hospital, Batman had expected some kind of reaction from the Martian, if not the others.

“And none of you got distracted?”

The team looked confused. Kaldur spoke up after several seconds.

“No. We did not.”

Later, Batman checked the hospital records to see if it had simply been a slow day. He discovered the complete opposite, that there had been a chemical explosion nearby and the hospital had been overcrowded with the victims, many of whom had died in agony.

J’onn had once commented about the sheer impossibility of shutting out strong emotions, even when he didn’t wish to pry.

Batman frowned, and wondered what was different here.

As all good things must end, so must all bad things get even worse. A reconnaissance mission in Kasnia had cut off communications, and the League had gone in after reports of bio-chemical weapons had surfaced.

--

“What do you mean, ‘no ill effects’? They were trapped in a warzone!”

--

The team had been found hiding in a canyon where the Northern and Southern forces had started fighting each other. The rock walls had stopped their coms, and the fighting was too violent for them to get out on their own.

--

“None of the children have said anything about the battles. It’s possible that they dodged any direct combat.”

“For two weeks? I saw the area from above, they had to at least encountered some of the… aftermath.” When Batman and Black Canary had found the team behind some boulders, Robin had just grinned and reported what they had found about the base they had been sent to study. Artemis and Kid Flash had started arguing about a bet (“told ya they’d find us before we had to move again”) and the others seemed just as relaxed ( ... )

As they had climbed out of the canyon, the team proved to have a solid understanding of the area. Apparently they had moved around several times to avoid the fighting. As they walked, Batman quietly watched for injuries, both physical and… other. Kid Flash walked rather slowly, but claimed it was just the lack of food.

“I don’t suppose you brought any with you?”

Black Canary and Batman traded glances. He pulled out a granola bar.

“Here.”

Green eyes lit up. “Score!”

--

“They haven’t shown any signs of trauma, though it could be a delayed reaction.”

--

They had almost reached the edge of the canyon when the explosions hit. Batman wasn’t sure if they’d been mistaken for the other side or if their attackers were just shooting on principle, but as rock shards rained down on them, he didn’t really care.

Their escape route took them through the remains of another battle. It was recent. The kids didn’t seem to notice.

Studying the carnage that he could only barely ignore, Batman wondered if that was a good thing or not.
