What the Others are Afraid Might be the Truth 1a/? anonymous April 26 2011, 00:26:16 UTC
The first red flag was Wally. Barry had brought him with to the lab where he had been working on some cold case files until an officer walked in.

"We've got a bad one, Allen." The officer grimaced as he tossed a folder onto Barry's desk. "Triple homicide."

Barry glanced at his nephew, who appeared to be engrossed in his chemistry homework. "On my way."

When he got back an hour later with the samples to analyze, Wally had abandoned his homework to look at the file that had been left. Barry winced as he realized it contained photos of the bloodbath he had just left.

He shouldn't have left the file with the boy. His young, curious nephew, who definitely wasn't ready for this kind of thing yet. Who was still staring at the photos in shock. Was he traumatized? Would he need therapy? Oh, Iris was going to kill him for letting Wally get exposed to-

Was Wally taking notes?

"Uh..."

Wally looked up.

"Oh! Did you find the weapon at the scene? I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to a blunt or semi-blunt object, but-" At Barry's face he quickly changed gears. "Sorry I thought I could help and IknowIshould'vewaitedbut- Uncle Barry? Are you okay?"

Barry had seen a lot of dead bodies in his years helping the police. These ones, he knew from experience, were still going to give him nightmares.

Wally was... just taking notes. He seemed fine.

Barry looked at the file again. It could wait.

"Come on, kid. Let's- let's go get some ice cream."

After a long conversation of sometimes bad things happens and it might take a while to sink ins and if you ever need to talks, Barry sighed. Wally still had that look of polite bafflement, and Barry was concerned.

What am I missing?

Polite bafflement is a good reaction, I love that description. But I love everything in this fill so far, so that may not be much of a shock. :D This is so, so, so, such a phenomenal start, anon.
