The Contradictions of Suzumiya Haruhi

Aug 28, 2006 01:55

So, someone sent me an email the other day (yesterday, actually), which wound up prompting this essay. The essence of it queried me about Kyon's take on Haruhi, and after a reply with them, I wound up waking up in the middle of the night and saying "...You know, that would make a great essay." What we have here is the result of that, and probably a ( Read more... )

You said it in the nicest way possible, I just simplified it to base facts without all the niceness. And hey, it gave me something to do during insomnia, so nothing wrong with that.

Can't say I know your canon, I wandered over because I'm something of an essay whore myself. But something's not sitting right with me on this. If you're not nice, then hey, no need for me to be either.

Essaying is awesome really. But you're saying that if someone takes the time to concrit you nicely and in private, you're going to put their name up in lights, link to it from CFO and misquote them without context. (and simplifying it to base facts without all the niceness IS in essence misquoting, whether you intended to or not, you made your critter look bad for doing something we all ask for). I'm just another player, but this isn't exactly kosher. It's discouraging people from talking to you and giving you something to do during insomnia.

I know what you're saying there, I really do. And that's perfectly fine what you're saying, and I'll quote what I said in the message below this:

Well, I always go by the policy of treating things the way I would expect people to treat me doing the same thing, so maybe it just comes down to personal takes on things. I'd be happy to show everyone the email if they want, it's not that big a deal. If I were to send something like that, regardless of how nice I worded it, I would admittedly be surprised if they didn't mention me by name if they know me, even vaguely.

In other words, no real intent was there, simply supplying a vague context for my seemingly random essaying. As for simplification of things... it's how I analyse things. When it comes down to it, the niceness winds up ignored because while it's nice... it doesn't actually supply anything to the argument, and at the base of things, virtually everything's an argument. Getting down to what the person's saying is more important than how nicely they say it, I think.

So is it alright to concrit you here then? I haven't done so since you don't seem to want it, but if your open to it then. Well.

Concrit is always welcome, whether public or private. I clearly fail at some things though, so if you want it to be private you'll probably have to specifically say so, or send it in an email. From hereon, all emails will be classed as private unless stated otherwise, so we don't have another situation like this. Concrit's quite helpful, though it sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night and gets me to do an essay for no apparent reason.

Okay, to start with I won't even touch on the Haruhi issue. That's a whole 'nother essay and I'll get to it later ( ... )

Now onto Haruhi.

Your essay was made in response to the e-mail a friend sent you. I asked her to show me that e-mail so I would know what had spurred on your 'random essay'. I think she made some very good points, by the way, which you didn't particularly acknowledge or address. Which is your prerogative of course, but I'm pointing it out bluntly for two reasons:

A) Sometimes, I think, people say they accept concrit and while they read it and don't throw a fit over it, they know, in their own head, that they are right and have no intention to change it. Her concrit and her canon examples were extremely valid and if, after reading it, you didn't seriously stop to think "have I messed up somewhere, that she thinks I'm leaving out what is a massive part of Kyon's charater" I would be most inclined to say that you never really considered her concrit at all. Though I'm sure it did spawn this essay which does perhaps justify your actions except for the part that I think it's a gross misrepresentation of not only Haruhi the character but ( ... )
