Your observations are interesting and I really like your idea of sliding scale co-op.

I think in regards to nutrition, it’s not that purposely there are fewer grocery stores in poorer neighborhoods but the lack of available consumers. It seems to me that my patients, who live in these neighborhoods, will not or cannot walk to the grocery store due to laziness or a medical condition. When I used to live in Woodruff place they had a Kroger across the street and now I believe the Kroger is gone. I remember walking to the Kroger and wondering how they stayed in business. I think it would be interesting for the co-op to have a delivery service. This would be really beneficial for the residents nearby who truly cannot make it to the grocery store. It’s amazing how many people I see who live in shanties who live without due to lack of help.

1. I don't know what line of work you are in, but I promise you that your patients aren't representative of the entire population of the near east side ( ... )

1) I am a Registered Dietitian. I work with patients who have Medicare and Medicaid as their sole source of insurance. Right now, I educate people in their homes on disease management and sometimes cover the ICU. I am on the east side a lot, primarily in the "swamp". I agree that my patients do not represent the entire population of the near east side; however, I never claimed they did. What I write below is just my observation from my encounters and the research I have read in response to your entry ( ... )
