1. Kenyon Farrow: Read his letter to Condoleeza Rice in "Letters from young activists." by Dan Berger. It is awesome, well written, insightful. I may or may not transcribe it here later

1) I am a Registered Dietitian. I work with patients who have Medicare and Medicaid as their sole source of insurance. Right now, I educate people in their homes on disease management and sometimes cover the ICU. I am on the east side a lot, primarily in the "swamp". I agree that my patients do not represent the entire population of the near east side; however, I never claimed they did. What I write below is just my observation from my encounters and the research I have read in response to your entry. 2) Yeah, I noticed that the other day. I didn't know it was stilled owned by Kroger. 3) I would disagree here. I am research based in my practice and the studies I read list the 10 top health threats as heart disease, cancer, stroke, COPD, diabetes, suicide, kidney disease (related to diabetes), obesity, influenza, and Alzheimer’s disease. These diseases can be managed by eating healthy however when presenting healthy eating to this particular group to improve health, they would rather eat bacon or the same foods that expedite the disease process. Food availability never really seems to be the issue. Many of them have family that will drive to the store and pick up food items. The malnourished patients usually have some sort of disease, drug problem, lack of family support, or motivation issue leading to the problem. Grant it, what I stated above is not the scenario for everyone. I really try not to make assumptions or claim to know it all. I completely agree and think availability of food should be improved for everyone including those who want/need/have to walk to the store. I think your idea is good and will improve a community for entirely different reasons.
