Laura had been getting weird looks ever since she arrived at the mall ( ... )

Nearby, Ty Lee had her eye on a different sort of footwear. "Oooooooh, those look comfy!" she said, snagging a pair of jazz sneakers off the shelf. With their split soles, she could still flex her feet as much as she wanted, but they offered slightly better protection from rocks than the flimsy thin-soled shoes reminiscent of ballet slippers she tended to favor.

Shoes in hand and soon to be on feet, her attention was free to take in more of the store. And it was drawn to Laura. "You look kinda familiar! You're from the Institute too, right?" she inquired. Of course, it was entirely possible it was Laura's outfit that Ty Lee was remembering, rather than Laura herself, but that was alright just for now. It wasn't like she'd had a chance to get to know most people yet. "I'm Ty Lee!"

Laura had noticed the other girl in the store, and recognised her well enough to know that she was part of the Institute. If she hadn't introduced herself, Laura doubted she would have spoken to her at all; nothing personal, of course. It was simply that as Laura understood it, the purpose of the trip to the mall was to acquire more clothing, not to socialise.

Still, she'd been spoken to, and not replying would've been rude.

“Hi,” she said, “I'm Laura.”

Nia hadn't had a chance to take many of her personal belongings with her, which was fair enough, as she'd been shoved in a large box and dumped in the desert. But luckily for her, the school has arranged an allowance for her to buy some new clothes and school supplies and things for her room before classes began.

She wandered along, peering fascinatedly into shops and trying on practically everything that caught her eye. Staring in the windows and not looking where she was going, she nearly tripped over Laura. Stopping herself just in time, she gasped and covered her mouth with her hands.

"Oh! I'm sorry!" She looked the other girl over, tilting her head. "You're from the Institute too, aren't you? Um, do you want to look in here with me?" She glanced a little shyly into the shoe shop, still overwhelmed by her first shopping trip.

Holly J and Kurt - Food court (Open to others) queenwitha_j September 19 2009, 17:44:13 UTC
Holly J had been showing Kurt a few standards of going to the mall. Clothing stores, jewelery stores, book stores. The usual stuff. She did get distracted a few times finding clothes she liked, but figured she didn't need that much, she brought a lot from home. Also this was all work, she was making herself known to the school. Helping a few of her less fortunate classmates, cementing herself as being a good nice person so people do what she asks later ( ... )

Kurt had had an awesome time shopping with Holly J. He didn't really care about the clothes and the jewelry and thing so much, and having just come from another country he didn't really have much money with him to spend anyway. But just being seeing all of the different stores and the people in them had been pretty cool. And Holly J was very nice, if not a little uptight; he really appreciated her taking the time to show him around like this.

Of course, he was in absolute awe when they stepped into the food court. So much fast food in one place! It was amazing. And even more amazing was Holly J's offer, "Really? You mean it? Wow, thanks!"

Had he had his own money with him, Kurt probably would have proceeded to get a little bit of everything, but since someone else was buying he figured he should probably be at least somewhat reasonable. Wanting to try something knew, he decided on a little taco stand. He headed back over to Holly J with a couple of burritos in hand.

Holly J quickly paid for the burritos (ew) for her new friend, "Go pick a table and I'll join you." She quickly walked over to the sushi place. She knew it wouldn't be the best sushi in the world, but it tasted good and had small portions. Unlike most people she actually didn't get hungry an hour after eating Sushi. Which meant she could look like she was eating a normal portion of food for once.

She sat down across from Kurt, "So Kurt, what was your life like, um... before here." She knew Kurt's life was... not standard, before here, but no details yet as to why. He seemed nice enough, a bit of a goofball, but even the dorks in her school had friends. It would do her some good to learn about her classmates a little.

Kurt took a seat at a nearby table and began munching enthusiastically on one of his burritos. "Oh man, this is awesome." He would definitely be remembering this eating establishment in the future. Oh yes.

But as Holly J asked her question. Not exactly his happiest topic of conversation, and he'd been asked about it a lot in the past couple of days. And he supposed the asking would continue for a while until he started to get to know everyone. "Not very interesting. I couldn't leave my house, because of my mutation. Ever. Coming to the school was the first time I did." Not that Holly J was going to understand that, since she hadn't seen him all blue and fuzzy yet, but he couldn't very well show her in the middle of the crowded food court. He smiled, "But now I'm here so that doesn't really matter anymore, right?"

GEOLOGY STORE--yeah, it's probably just going to be Rictor in here tembloroso September 19 2009, 18:21:16 UTC
Rictor really didn't want to go, but, well, he had his list. Toph had ambushed him in his room and promptly kicked him out of bed, shoving a little piece of paper in his hands and declaring that he was to bring her rocks. Lots of rocks.

So now he was in the frickin' rock store, looking for a good sample of agate and some geodes or whatever, like fifty different types of quartz.

Fuck this. He could be in bed. He could be outside. He could be doing pretty much anything but turning to the rock salesguy and asking, awkwardly, "Um. You know where I can find the pyrite?"

There wasn't anything Hisako really needed, but she'd come along on to the mall anyway when she'd heard some of the other students were going. It was a good chance to meet them, although what she was doing currently was just standing slightly bemusedly in a geology store.

She'd followed the boy from the Institute in because she was curious. "Either rock-collecting's your hobby, or you're catching up on homework even before it's assigned," she said, coming up by his side to look at the display case before realising that was probably rude.

"Sorry, hi, I'm Hisako. I'm also from the Institute!"

Rictor set his piece of flourite down in his basket and turned around.

"Oh, it's been assigned, all right," he grumbled, fishing his list out of his pocket to show it to her. "I guess I got some kinda private lesson thing going on. Frickin' Toph--that's my teacher--she's makin' me get her some rocks."

He gave her a slightly weary smile. "I'm Rictor," he said. "Well, Julio, but no one really calls me that here."

"Rictor's a nice name," Hisako said agreeably, "But so is Julio. How'd you get your nickname?"

She bent over, scanning through the extensive list and had to hide a smile at it. That was one enthusiastic teacher. "Is it for geography class? I know a bit about tectonic plates," she said. Of course she would- she'd lived in Japan for most of her life, where children in preschool were taught what to do in case of an earthquake.

Josh was generally very fond of shopping; he was more the type to go to the mall only when there was something specific that he needed. But today he hadn't really had anything else to do--and he was pretty close to needing another WoW time card when he thought about it-- so he had tagged along. He knew he should at least be making some sort of an effort to make some friends, but after spending the first few minutes of the bus ride there not talking to anyone and not really knowing what to say he'd resigned to just listening to his ipod.

When they arrived at the mall he headed straight for the video game store. He found himself a time card, and then began idly looking through the other computer games.

Virgil wasn't sure what he'd find at the mall but if he was going to be living here for awhile it would be best to try to discover where he could find what he needed in terms of video games, movies, comics, and things of that nature. The mall was a great place to start for all that.

Thankfully, most malls seemed to be made up in roughly the same fashion so it wasn't hard at all for Virgil to find one of the stores he was looking for. He was mostly looking for a headset since his had broken somehow on the move over here. If he was going to be playing any online games with Richie back home, he was going to need a new headset. You couldn't exactly trash talk without one.

"Hey, you're from the Institute, right," Virgil asked upon spying the other kid in the computer game section.

Thanks to his hearing being so sensitive, Josh was easily able to hear the other person addressing him despite having music playing. It still caught him a bit off guard, and he looked up in surprise, "Huh? Oh, yeah. I guess you must be, too, then?"

He removed his headphones and quickly stuffed them into his pocket with his ipod; he could've easily continued to have the conversation with them on, but he figured the other kid would probably think that was rude. Then he began fiddling with the time card in his hands. Small talk really wasn't his forte.

Virgil hadn't realized he was listening to some tunes until he pulled his earphones out. If he had known he was interrupting he probably wouldn't have said anything.

"Yeah, I think I saw you around when everyone was moving their stuff. I'm Virgil." Virgil didn't really care for small talk, but usually he could get by all right, as long as he found something to talk about. "You shopping for some games too? I think most of the good game releases come out later this month."

Joshua had already explored some of the clothing stores around- ignoring the strange looks he received when he admired the more 'girly' clothes. (Really, though, what was with this mentality that boys couldn't be fashionable?) He'd eventually abandoned that, however, when he passed by the bookstore.

He walked in, and came across a dilemma almost immediately. Which one to hunt down, Shakespeare or Dante? Oh decisions, decisions...

Sanae had escaped as soon as everyone had left his car. He still felt rather traumatized by having to drive a car full of teenage girls (and boys? He couldn't tell sometimes) to a mall--and worse, they were all mutant kids, so now he was responsible if they somehow blew up the mall.

Which he wasn't sure they wouldn't.

Still, he'd escaped and was now hiding in one of the aisles of the bookstore, leafing through Good Omens for his favorite parts. He'd already read it in Japanese, but was interested in reading it in its native tongue--which was always the best way to read any book.
