[...Who are you and why are you walking down the halls like a stalker]

...Can I help you? [paused at Al's door. Staring at his own door. Where Javert is being creepy]

[There is a pungent, pregnant cause, though it takes Javert several moments for him to slowly look up at Matthew and fix one of the coldest gazes on him that a single man could manage. Or, well, it would be very cold if Matthew could see through those damn sunglasses.

He can probably feel the vibes seeping through the glass, though. As if he were just a specimen.

The man arches a dark brow.]

You live here.

[It isn't a question. The clipboard is tilted in such a way that Matthew cannot glimpse what is on it.]

Do you have a roommate?

Lamperouge. [Javert's French accent is perfect, and, in fact, it seems to explain the odd, abrupt way he speaks. He adds in a mutter through his teeth] Yes.

[He sounds remarkably bored about it, and appears as if he's reading the name off of a list on his clipboard. He again raises his gaze to Matt, gesturing to the door with his pen.]

Is he in the room?

[Have a twelve-year-old with a pile of books headed outside--it's after curfew, although she does have an excuse, but one which is one of those verbal explanations with no actual paperwork involved.]

[Javert is quick to halt her, a mild grimace at his mouth. He simply steps into her path like a security checkpoint at the airport gates.]

Study hours are over at eleven. [This is not a man that pussyfoots his subjects.] Who are you?

[Ammy pauses to put her books on the floor and pulls out a notebook, before writing in quick, neat handwriting:]

"I sleep outside. I attend school here."

[Javert peers at the note, a frown on his face. He fixes a lengthy stare on Ammy.]

... Indeed.

[He finally concedes. There's only so much he can glean from a glimpse at any man or woman. Oftentimes it takes him quite a long time of recollection to organize all of the information.]

Then you are well provided for outside? [His lip curls.] Guarded.

[If you know what to look for, Toris has "wary not-too-far-removed-from-stealing-on-the-streets urchin" written all over him. AND I AM SURE JAVERT KNOWS WHAT TO LOOK FOR.]

You are?

[Aside from really creepy.]

Working. Apparently.

[Indeed, Javert knows exactly what to look for, and upon settling his stern gaze on Toris's, his intuition is confirmed. A grimace sprouts on his face.

Rather than answer the direct question from the student, he thrusts his square chin toward the door beside him.]

You had best be headed back inside. This is your room?

[Toris draws himself up more without thinking, his posture hardening.]

I'm sure that's none of your business. Sir.

[The hard pause was intentional.]

[The corner of his mouth twitches into a smirk. On the contrary, Toris: it is his business.]

Staff are to know their students. And I am not mistaken in assuming you are a student.

Are you Laurinaitis?

[Spending so much time in his room today lemme tell you. But he's getting a seriously creepy feeling that someone is in the hall. So he gets up to creak open the door and take a peek- AHAH WOW SUSPICIONS ARE CORRECT]

Uh. [ducks his head out to look around, then glances back up at the man] You want somethin', mister?

[He's walking back to his dorm from the library. He stops as he sees Javert outside his door.]

May I help you?

[Javert is just finishing marking something down on his clipboard. The corner of his mouth twitches, and he awards the boy with a disinterested glance. He arches a brow, responding quite bluntly and abruptly,]

Not at this moment.

[He gives a low snort and steps aside, wryly adding,] Don't let me keep you. Curfew is approaching fast.

[He glances down at the clipboard, and replies dryly,] I'm well aware.

Normally curfew isn't so severely enforced. Is this a new security measure? [He asks this as he opens his door, polite enough, but also sounding vaguely suspicious.]

Only an enforcement of the rules as written. [And now Javert settles a lengthy, intent stare on the student, his eyes shrouded by his dark sunglasses.] Hardly new for students who choose to stay in at a reasonable hour.
