Beta Sign-Up Post

As you know, it is a requirement that all entries in The X-files Big Bang have a beta reader. Beta readers act as sounding boards, editors, and cheerleaders for authors by helping them get a first reaction to their story. A good beta reader is essential to the generation of most quality fiction. While authors are free to work with existing betas ( Read more... )

How many 20,000+ fics could your realistically help with?: Two

(The following will help authors find a beta who is compatible with their personal needs.)
What are your strengths as a beta (e.g. Grammar, Characterization, Story Background, Research, Cheerleading, etc.)? grammar, research, cheerleading(excellent at this one!), tone, tense(I'm a stickler about this one), pacing, keeping track of plot points(I love flow chart, yo) and potential plot holes
What is your weakest point as a beta? I can be a little hesitant with criticism for fear of hurting feelings. It might take me a little while to take off the kid gloves.
Do you prefer to beta for slash, gen, or het? I do it all, baby.
In which fandoms could you expertly beta a crossover?
What story ratings are you comfortable with (e.g. G, PG, Pg-13, R, or NC-17)? I'd be happy to work with any rating level.
Any story kinks you can not work with (e.g. rape, insest, character death, chia pets, torture, etc.)? ( ... )

What are your strengths as a beta (e.g. Grammar, Characterization, Story Background, Research, Cheerleading, etc.)? Grammar and language in general (tense, punctuation etc); research; canon accuracy; plot inconsistencies; characterization; finding the exact right word/words for something you're trying to express; and lots of cheerleading.

What is your weakest point as a beta? My canon knowledge of S8 and S9 sucks because I can't bear to watch them. So I'd suit someone writing a fic set in S1-7 the best, or AU of course.

Do you prefer to beta for slash, gen, or het? Anything!

In which fandoms could you expertly beta a crossover? None :( The only fandom I know inside out is XF.

What story ratings are you comfortable with (e.g. G, PG, Pg-13, R, or NC-17)? Again, anything!

Any story kinks you ( ... )

How many 20,000+ fics could your realistically help with?: 1.

(The following will help authors find a beta who is compatible with their personal needs.)
What are your strengths as a beta? I'd say characterisation (strongest on Scully, imo but still strong on the others after 15 years in this fandom), canon nitpicking, plot holes, cheerleading (it's a general personality trait), grammar.
What is your weakest point as a beta? I can be nervous to really go at a piece at first, but I will get more confident with it as we get to know each other.
Do you prefer to beta for slash, gen, or het? I think I'd be best at het, then gen, then slash. I don't have many slash ships, and none in this verse so I wouldn't want to have my inexperience with it interfere.
In which fandoms could you expertly beta a crossover? Doctor Who, Buffy, BSG, Farscape, Firefly.

I've looked at the dates and think I can handle two jobs :) I thought the deadline was MUCH sooner than the end of October. Drop me a line and we can chat, if you aren't the person who already contacted me!

What are your strengths as a beta (e.g. Grammar, Characterization, Story Background, Research, Cheerleading, etc.)? Definitely grammar. I'm also an expert at spotting spelling errors and typos. I'm a great cheerleader, and I'd totally spam your inbox if you'd like.xD Characterization is my forte, and I'm great with dialogue and weird POV's. If you're writing in second person, I'm your girl.
What is your weakest point as a beta? I didn't watch S9 in its entirety, so yeah. I may also miss some tense mistakes if they aren't too obvious. It would be helpful if you indicate at the start what tense you'll be using.
Do you prefer to beta for slash, gen, or het? Het and gen only, please. If you must, I'm more comfortable with femmeslash.
In which fandoms could you expertly beta a crossover? Oh dear ( ... )

What are your strengths as a beta (e.g. Grammar, Characterization, Story Background, Research, Cheerleading, etc.)? Grammar. Prior notice on potentially problematic areas (ie the Great Issues of Grammar that divide us all): I take issue with split infinitives and the use of the word 'enormity' in reference to size. Research, especially the kind that requires finding a ton of information just to write one sentence. Dialogue.

What is your weakest point as a beta? Cheerleading and/or capslocked excitement. It is quite impossible for me to lavish unabashed praise on anything, but I'm not the brutally honest kind, either. Plot is not my strong suit.

Do you prefer to beta for slash, gen, or het? Gen or het would be best.

In which fandoms could you expertly beta a crossover? Bones, CSI, Pushing Daisies (no, seriously)

What story ratings are you comfortable with (e.g. G, PG, Pg-13, R, or NC-17)? G ( ... )

1/2 claim. I have a beta but might need a little more help with a few specific sections and details. But it wouldn't be nearly as involved as being a primary beta.
