“Are you sure about this?”
Kyuhyun fidgeted, peering around nervously where the dead silence lingered in the thick air. There was no one in sight except for the two of them- well, living ones anyway. The way the shadow of trees swaying in harmony casted on the cold evening grounds didn’t help tone down the eeriness.
“Calm down, won’t you kid? It’s not nice to wet your pants on someone’s grave. Take the shovel and come here.” Heechul’s face did not look pleased at all while he panted slightly. He lowered his body and looked down at the small forgotten tombstone hidden away in the sea of many others; colour washed away by the winds of time, words faded into the yesteryears.
“Are you sure about this, Victoria-ssi?”
Kyuhyun gave a jump slightly when a girl’s voice spoke, just slightly above a whisper; frail and tinged with melancholy.
“Yes, it’s his grave. I watched them bury him here without a name. Please help me, Heechul-ssi. I will be forever grateful to you.” Kyuhyun shuddered slightly as a sudden rush of breeze punctuated the girl’s pleading.
He could only imagine how her face looked like; sad eyes that matched the voice slowly forming in his mind. The tragic story of two lovebirds lost in the woods many, many years before had unfolded itself in front of Heechul and Kyuhyun’s eyes a moment ago, but their faces were very much hidden and blurry, making them hard to make out in the surreal and dream-like vision. Kyuhyun had just only gotten used to the slight delirium and nauseating feeling accompanying it every time.
Heechul shook his head as he straightened up, flinching slightly at the pain that ached dully in his right leg. It must be that time of the year again; Winter.
“So you want to leave it here?”
The girl with wavy brown hair falling graciously below her shoulders nodded with a small smile. “I’m afraid I won’t get to meet him again. After all, it’s been too long. So I want it here with him. I’m glad they found him, even though they didn’t know who he was. Even if they can’t find my body, it’s okay.”
“Yah, come dig a hole here,” Heechul said in an ordering voice while Kyuhyun tilted his head uncertainly. The older man shook his head before grabbing the shovel from his hands, digging into the hard solid ground himself as the cold winds blew harder. “You spoiled brat. I shouldn’t have asked you to come. Watch out for the grave keeper then. He buries naughty little children alive.” The man smirked deviously despite his efforts to dig into the ground, the cold winds making him turn pink slightly in the cheeks. But it wasn’t long before Kyuhyun saw the older man clutching onto his leg slightly and cringing, gritting his teeth as he continued.
“Yah, hyung. You’re doing it wrong,” Kyuhyun commented in a mock disgruntled manner before grabbing the shovel back, but it was only because he couldn’t stand the nagging feeling inside as he watched the hidden pained expression. “Is this deep enough?”
“A little more. Didn’t you take your lunch? Wait a while, Victoria-ssi. This kid’s muscles are all in the wrong places. Concentrated only in the butt region.” Heechul gave a rare childish chuckle as he watched the younger boy’s back from behind. The girl gave a soft laugh as well. “Yah! Don’t make fun of my ass!” Kyuhyun exclaimed suddenly, letting go of the shovel and trying to cover his bottom with his hands.
“Kyuhyun-ssi…You remind me of him. Please don’t lose yourself like he did…” Kyuhyun shivered slightly as he felt something cold brush past his cheek.
“Here…” the girl’s soft voice rang eerily.
Kyuhyun was wiping his forehead before rubbing his eyes instead. A silver necklace with a pendant seemed to have materialised out of thin air and fell into Heechul’s open palm. At a closer look, it was a ‘V’ encircled partially with a thin heart shape, embedded with small shiny white stones.
“Please bury it beside him for me. I want it to be with him…before I go.”
Heechul closed his palm and nodded as he watched the girl in a flowing white dress began to become less and less opaque, the faint rays of sunlight passing through her body. He raised his clasped hand above the hole as they watched the silver chain slide down from his slightly shivering hand, bringing all his and her memories down together with it.
A faint ‘thank-you’ lingered in the air as they covered up the hole with soil together, one hand after another, neither one making a sound. Kyuhyun sneaked a glance and watched as a small, content smile creeping subtly on Heechul’s face as he nodded to the empty air. For a moment or two their fingers brushed past each other’s lightly, and Kyuhyun had a sudden urge longing for warmth. Both their hands were grimy and brown from the dirt on the ground, especially jarring to the eyes when on Heechul’s milky white hands.
Kyuhyun twitched his mouth subconsciously in wonder as they sat side-by-side each other in front of the tombstone, under the skeletal framework of a big tree.
“Got something to ask?” Heechul’s voice cut his reverie short as he snapped awake quickly.
“You’re strange.” Before he realized the words rolled off his tongue. “I don’t understand you.”
Heechul chuckled slightly, throwing his head backwards. “Aish, you brat. I’m not begging to be understood here. I don’t need to be understood.”
Kyuhyun shook his head. “What happened to your leg? I saw you clutching it when you were trying to dig just now. I thought you only hurt your hand the other day.”
Heechul looked to the horizon where the sun was once again about to be swallowed up by the mountains, although it wasn’t very clear today with the mist and everything. He pretended to scowl slightly while trying to brush away the dirt from his hands. It was a long time since anyone had brought it up.
Heechul shook his head. “Must have been the way I had to drag you all the way that day. Broke my right leg when I was eight. They inserted metal rods in there.”
Kyuhyun gasped. “How?”
“Car accident. That’s when I started seeing ghosts.”
Heechul stared into the empty space as he fell into silence, resting his hands on his knees. He decided the sleepless nights and nightmares must’ve taken a toll on him. He had never told a single soul about what happened so many years ago, at least not on his own accord. Kyuhyun swallowed and didn’t dare to move to break the silence, yet he was hoping for the man to continue his tale.
They both sat in silence before Heechul finally reached a hand up to brush his own head (but stopped halfway when he remembered how dirty it was) and scoffed.“Aish, I don’t know why I’m telling you so much. You’re just a brat.”
Subconciously Kyuhyun gave a pout. “Maybe because you can’t resist my awesome and you’re beginning to fall for my genius? Or perhaps you’re beginning to trust me?” Kyuhyun said before he could stop himself, feeling a bubble of hope rise in his chest towards the end.
Heechul hit him in the head suddenly with the back of his hand lightly. “Again, why are you so full of yourself? And I’m not strange. It is you that said that who is strange.”
“I only learnt it from you, aish!” Kyuhyun lamented disgruntledly, rubbing his head slightly. Heechul gave another scoff and shook his head, muttering 'pabo' under his breath.
“No, uh-It’s just that you, for someone who seems to live only for yourself with that big attitude of yours, uh-how do I say it?” He was once again lost for words in front of the man who was picking up a bright orange leaf and toying with it in his fingers. “You always seem so cold from the outside… yet you do so much for these spirits, even if you act like you’re so annoyed by them. I really don’t get you.” Kyuhyun shook his head in the cold breeze and wrapped his arms around himself, not daring to see the other man’s face in case he shot fire from the eyes.
Heechul hid a laugh in his scoff, leaning back with his hands propped on the ground as he stared at the evening sky in silence yet again. “They’re annoying but in the end, I would also hope for someone’s help if I were in their position. Everyone has their own story to tell. Plus, I don’t want them hanging around me. It’s not like you don’t know how they are by now.”
Kyuhyun knew from the icy tone that it was only half the truth. The man had too big of an ego to admit that he tries his best to help fulfil their last wishes although he always complained. For someone who hated the outdoors and always seemed so selfish, coming all the way to an empty cemetery and getting dirt all over his flawless hands was just so uncharacteristic.
“Wait a minute…If you got it from a car accident…then where did I get mine from?” he wondered aloud suddenly, remembering that he didn’t used to hear voices before this.
“Did you have any serious injuries or trauma or the sorts before this?” Heechul asked.
It’s his turn to fall silent, trying to scan his memories for any likely accidents or causes for it. He jolted awake and deflated in doubt suddenly. “What is it?” Heechul questioned curiously.
“I had a surgery about a year ago. For Otitis Media. Uh, middle ear infection.” He scratched his head apprehensively. Heechul chuckled again. “That should be it then. Your mystery is not so mysterious after all. At least mine is worth an episode of a drama. Yours wouldn’t even make the cut for any broadcast.”
Kyuhyun cried out in surprise. “That’s it?? Because of that I have to bear with the voices blaring in my head?!” Heechul shrugged with a smirk as Kyuhyun’s shoulders drooped with disappointment.
“How on earth do you deal with them anyway? A bunch of them have been dogging me by the heels since the day at the beach. And you told me they wouldn’t follow me!” Kyuhyun lamented with a pout.
“What are you talking about? I don’t see any hanging around you now.”
Kyuhyun held his breath in and strained his ears for a moment, listening for anymore of the odd bodiless voices. It was surprisingly quiet except for the soft whooshing sound that the breeze was making.
“That’s strange.” He breathed out and shuddered slightly, the cold was getting more and more noticeable. “But I swear I always hear them nowadays. I think one of them even followed me home, but I only heard him there about once or twice.”
“Well, from what I see there’s no one there. So you must’ve done something clever for once.”
“Does yelling at them count?” Kyuhyun said meekly.
A smug smile formed across the man’s face as kyuhyun felt a warm hand around his shoulders that made him shudder even more. “You’re learning fast, kiddo.” Kyuhyun’s mind seemed to have stopped working for a while before he groaned. Heechul began laughing hysterically suddenly.
“Yah, hyung! Your hands are dirty!” Subconciously his own hands grabbed for the milky-white ones but sat stunned for a while when something white fell onto and all around them.
“It…It’s snowing…”
“I know, I can see that.”
Heechul sat in silence melancholically, eyes devouring the sight of white making their way to the ground, enveloping them in the cold. Winter was here again; the season of cold and loneliness eating him from inside. How many winters ago had it been? He wondered if it was cold where they were now.
Realizing that his own cold hand was still grabbing Heechul’s, he quickly withdrew, face turning warmer and warmer when it should have been colder. The passing of season into winter had been a strange lucky coincidence. He shook his head mentally and tugged but his hands wouldn’t move, held back by something.
“Leave it there a little while. It’s cold.” He thought he heard the man mutter quietly under his breath
And Kyuhyun didn’t dare to make another move.
