Listen (Part 1) - in Masterlist Prologue Chapter 1 Chapter 2
“Hyung, where have you been?!”
Heechul was just about to insert his keys into the keyhole before the door flew open backwards.
“Hey Siwonnie. You’re back from classes?” He popped the keys on the end table instead and removed his jacket while Siwon shook his head and crossed his rippled arms. “Back from classes? It’s nine o’clock. Your classes end at one today. Where did you go?”
“I didn’t know I had a curfew. And there you go again, stalking me. I would have to call the police if you don’t stop being so obsessed with me, ya know? What’s so urgent?” he smirked and rolled his eyes.
“It’s not like I want to stalk you, but after the incident with Shin Donghee, we can’t risk you being in danger again,” Siwon said as-a-matter-of-factly, eyes steering towards Heechul’s bandaged arm.
“I’m fine, seriously, okay? I was just at the park and then the beach, that’s all. The weather was rather nice today.” He plopped onto the couch and reached for the remote. Music Bank’s rerun was going to be on in five minutes and if Siwon didn’t stop talking he was going to make him swallow the TV.
“What?! The park and the beach? Tell me you just went to a PC Bang where you just played a new game which involves places like the park and the beach,” Siwon said, closing his eyes while pinching the bridge of his nose wearily.
Heechul, however, shook his head. “A real one, with trees and seagulls and all. Now do you mind, I want to watch F(x)’s comeback stage. Sulli looks good, and don’t you think Amber looks so much like Donghae?”
“But hyung, you never go to the beach or the park. Well, unless me or Hangeng-hyung-“he swallowed before continuing. “-goes with you. Did you really go there alone?”
“You’re not listening to me, Siwonnie. I said, don’t you think Amber looks so much like Donghae? And speaking of that fish, where is he now? It’s past nine; he should be off by now. And I didn’t go alone.” Heechul was now up and wiggling slightly to the catchy tune, trying to learn up the new dance.
Siwon stared at the older man twirl around while doing some hand movements awkwardly with the use of only one hand. “I haven’t seen him either. Then who did you go with?”
“It’s simpler this time, the choreography. Stingy SM should spend some money. Cho Kyuhyun.” He sat down on the couch again, flipping the channel during the commercial break.
“That kid again?? Why on earth would you go to the beach with him? It could have been dangerous!” Siwon cried in exasperation, eyes widened to almost the maximum extent.
Heechul nodded as a cute little girl twirled around with her puppy in a dog food commercial. “I needed to know something. Remember that game you hate that Hankyung and I used to play at the beach?” He ignored the somewhat bitter taste in his mouth as he said the name.
“Not that one, please tell me not that one. Did anyone follow you back?” Heechul shrugged his shoulders playfully, a grin on his face. “Relax, I told the kid to leave the kimchi and kimbap there as an offering. They’d probably be occupied with it for a while. You should’ve seen the kid run, it was hilarious.”
A new male idol group came on TV while Siwon looked as if he was hyperventilating. “But that’s crazy! You could have been drained out! You could have collapsed and died and no one would know! And -but…you’re still here watching Music Bank…”Heechul loved how the voice trailed off at the end. “And you’re alright…”
Heechul turned the TV off when he realized the group didn’t have any good-looking members.
“Exactly.”
Siwon’s eyebrows formed a nice thick line with a puzzled expression, trying to fit the pieces of puzzle together.
“That kid…just the two of you alone?” Heechul nodded encouragingly.
Siwon gulped. “He can…hear them...And now he can also-“
Siwon’s sentence was cut short by an ear-splitting crash of glass came from the kitchen accompanied by a very loud shriek of a meow, sending the both of them jumping nearly out of their skin. “What the hell is that?”
“Oh yeah, I forgot! It’s Ryeowook, he’s been breaking the kitchen since I came back. And then Donghae’s not around-“Siwon explained but Heechul was already glaring at him. “Aish, you never told me Wook was back already!” he muttered under his breath crossly before rushing off. But Siwon held him back by the arm suddenly.
“Aish, we’ll continue this conversation later.”
The both of them popped their heads into the kitchen to see a big mess of broken china and splattered food on the kitchen tiles, leading back to the feet of a fidgety small-framed man.
“I’m sorry, hyung. I’ll clean up the mess.” Ryeowook crouched to reach for a piece of broken china before being held back firmly by Heechul’s hand.
“You’re bleeding already.” Ryeowook’s hand fell limply in his grip to the other side to make sure the crimson trail did not stain his Heechul-hyung’s hand.
“There’s something wrong with you, Wookie and don’t think we don’t realize it. You never break anything in your precious kitchen and your fried rice had never been so spicy before. Not to mention your hands are shaking no matter what you’re doing for the past week. Tell, what’s going on?” Ryeowook’s hand struggled slightly but to no avail, failing miserably against the older man’s hidden strength and intense stare.
“Ryeowook, please, you’ve got to tell us what’s wrong. You’ve not been yourself lately and it’s worrying us a lot,” Siwon added, hurrying in with a roll of bandage. “I’m fine, hyung. My hands were wet so the plate slipped out of them,” Ryeowook said softly, eyes fixed on the pile of broken dishes on the floor.
“Who am I to you, huh? An outsider, someone you can’t trust to help you? If that’s the case, then I’ll let go.” Ryeowook cringed slightly after Heechul finally released his hand which was then ushered off to be flushed under the kitchen tap by Siwon.
Heechul stood up and walked around the edge of the broken mess, pulling out a chair and sitting down casually, adjusting his arm-sling slightly.
The cuts on Ryeowook’s fingers stung under the flushing water and it hurt, but somehow it felt revitalizing. He felt like he had just woken up from a trance. But being awake and conscious was not a state he had wanted to be in at the moment.
Siwon turned off the tap and dried the younger boy’s hand gently with a kitchen towel, carefully steering him away from the danger zone only to find a small shard of white porcelain embedded in the boy’s leg.
“Your phone’s about to break from all the misscalls and texts too. Obviously we’re not the only ones who think there’s something wrong with you,” Heechul said nonchalantly, eyeing the black phone buzzing on the kitchen table. The name ‘Yesung’ flashed across the screen.
Siwon hurriedly ushered the younger boy into a chair and carefully picked the shard out. Ryeowook didn’t even flinch when the tiny piece dislodged and fell between Siwon’s fingers.
“It’s your father, isn’t it?” Heechul’s voice rang firmly across the kitchen. Even Heebum was tiptoe-ing quietly and settling down on the kitchen counter, eyeing the puzzle of china warily. Siwon looked up with a puzzled expression while the younger boy shook lightly. A long intense silence sliced through the air; he knew Heechul must have hit home Ryeowook bit on his own lip.
“Beige called me. They found him. Told me he’s on the verge of dying. Stomach cancer. How ironic.”
Ryeowook’s voice was cold and unfeeling and it was the first time Siwon had ever heard the gently, soft-spoken boy speak that way. He shuddered slightly as he carefully plastered a band-aid on the wound after cleaning and applying some iodine on it.
“What do you plan to do?”
Ryeowook got up and nodded a swift ‘thank you’ to Siwon. “Nothing. He deserved it." He reached for the broom and dustpan, starting to clean up the mess mechanically. Heechul exhaled and got up as well, stretching a little. “Don’t cut yourself again when you’re cleaning.”
Siwon stared back exasperatedly at his hyung and then back to the younger man. “But he’s still your father! You might never get to see him again! God wants us to be good to our parents and-“. Siwon blurted out suddenly but was held back firmly by the arm by Heechul. “Let it go, he won’t listen for now.” Ryeowook was already leaving the kitchen to throw the broken pieces away.
“Hey Wookie! I’m back -whoah! What happened?” Donghae’s voice rang from the living room as Heechul and Siwon both made it out of the messy kitchen.
“Hey hyung, Siwonnie! What’s wrong with Wookie?” Donghae was practically prancing delightfully into the room, a big grin plastered on his face.
“Where have you been, Lee Donghae?” Heechul questioned, shaking his head. “Erm, work and then I was just, err, hang out with a friend after that. Erm, so, what’s up with Wook?"
Heechul narrowed his eyes. “Friend?”
Donghae gulped and tried to hide it with an awkward laugh, brushing it aside. “Yeah, friend! So-“
Donghae stopped and held his breath in mid-sentence as the three of them watched Ryeowook walk back into the living room quietly pass them like a storming phantom as his phone rang from the kitchen yet again.
“Can someone tell me what’s going on already?” he whispered pleadingly.
“Ryeowook’s father is about to die soon,” Heechul said casually and then walked into his room, Heebum trailing him closely from behind.
Donghae’s mouth was left hanging as he turned to look at Siwon who nodded back solemnly although shocked at Heechul’s blunt words initially. “Cancer. Ryeowook’s stepsister called. “
“Oh.”

After the crazy day out with Heechul, Kyuhyun sat at the dinner table and stared at his Yesungie-hyung’s tired face. His apartment-mate, however, was far more interested in poking his cellphone and then sighing loudly in frustration than the plate of bugolgi kimbap that Kyuhyun had laid in front of him. A little furry thing brushed past his leg and he jolted slightly only to find that it was Ddaming begging to be picked up after being ignored by her owner. Kyuhyun shook his head and finally picked the dog up and rested it on his lap.
“Hyung, your phone’s gonna break soon, the bulgogi is turning into rubber soon, and your dog is gonna run away soon. Not to mention your kind dongsaeng is also going to turn into stone soon if you don’t stop poking your phone like that.”
“The number you have dialled is currently unavailable! I think I’ve heard it enough to last me a lifetime. Aish!” Jongwoon slammed his phone onto the table, startling the younger boy and the small dog into a jump, both who yelped in surprise at the same time. Kyuhyun shook his head mentally when he thought he heard a third cry of surprise. Maybe it was an echo.
“He must be ignoring you for a reason or his phone must be broken by now too! What’s wrong with you and Ryeowook-ssi?” Kyuhyun cried in exasperation, stroking Ddaming’s fur in order to calm her down.
Jongwoon looked up in surprise and blinked. “How did you know that it’s Ryeowook I’m trying to call?”
“He’s practically the only one that can send you into fits like that. Give it a rest, can’t you? If someone called me that many times I’d be annoyed too. What did you do wrong?” Kyuhyun asked, passing the dog over rather roughly back to its respective owner.
Yesung shook his head slowly while taking Ddaming into his arms and cuddled her, scratching the back of her ears soothingly. “The biggest problem here is that I don’t even know what’s wrong. Everything was alright, and then maybe I got a little impatient and then he received a call and stormed away without saying anything. He’s not usually like that, Kyu. I’m worried.” Yesing cupped his face with both hands in frustration, sending the small dog leaping down from his lap.
“Do you want me to call Heechul-hyung for you? He’s Ryeowook’s apartment-mate right?” Kyuhyun offered, a strange funny feeling lingered when the name so fluidly rolled off his tongue.
Yesung looked up in mild surprise. “Heechul? I thought you’re done with him after that Shin Donghee incident? And where did you go just now? I didn’t see after class.”
The image of the two of them running hand-in-hand through the sand like crazy flashed through his mind. Kyuhyun hesitated for a split second before clearing his throat casually, pretending to be more interested in mixing the rice thoroughly for his hyung. “Ah, I was just out at the, uh, beach.”
The older man pushed his red spectacles up the bridge of his nose with a finger to take a better look at his face. “Beach? With who?”
“There, eat it now, will you? With uh, Heechul-hyung.” He pushed the plate back to Jongwoon.
“I see…” Yesung picked up the spoon and started to scoop some rice up. But he took it out from his mouth the next second. “With him? And since when you call him ‘hyung’? And Kyu, why is your face so red?”
Kyuhyun touched his face immediately with alarm and blinked twice. “Aish, I’m a good kid, alright? And it’s just hot in here. I’m going to my room, now eat up.” He pushed his chair backwards sheepishly and got up.
“Can you really call Heechul-ssi for me?” Jongwoon said in a small voice, pushing his food around with the spoon.
“With a fee.” Kyuhyun said in mock disgruntle as he waved and walked out of the kitchen, leaving the other boy who broke into a grin and started wolfing down his food.
He shook his head with a smile as he walked out of the kitchen and into the hallway. He was just about to enter his room when he spotted Ddaming lying on the floor on her back. His hand withdrew from the doorknob slowly as he continued watching curiously. The dog had one leg shaking in delight, as if being scratched on the belly by someone. He had recognized it because he had seen Yesung do it to her a thousand times before. But there was obviously no one around.
Kyuhyun nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard a voice spoke, just barely above a whisper.
“What a good girl you are.”
