Listen (Part 1) - in Masterlist Prologue
Murmurs, Inaudible murmurs. Like voices and strange sounds veiled with an invisible cloth they were muffled.
He had tried to talk to them after a while, over and over again, but none of them talked back; at least not in a way he could understand. The voices were high and low, with different pitches and tone, each encrypted with messages he wasn’t sure was meant for him.
He had been calling out to them as soon as he realized he actually had a voice of his own too, the sound of it rolling off his tongue felt oddly foreign.
He didn’t know how long the weird sounds and voices had been there, or how long he had been walking alone in places that seemed familiar yet not remember having been to. There was utterly no sense of time here, unexplained lapses of it leaving him confused and disorientated. In those times he was ‘awake’, he wandered around as far as he could remembered, on empty streets and busy days, passersby not giving any thought to him. He was like the guy who was always there but no one notices.
After a long while he had given up trying to talk to anyone or remembering who he was, resigning to wander about and somehow hope that one day this nightmare would be over. He’d continue walking and wandering to different places, slowly gaining the ability to listen and observe different people from all walks of life. But it wasn’t long before he realized that some small children could see and hear him, responding to him when he smiles at them. Soon he plays with them because it gets so lonely at times. He isn’t sure if they are the same as him, but he could somehow feel their loneliness too.
Today he somehow found himself at a park, thick with trees and the sounds of nature. A fine breeze accompanied the pleasant weather. It was a rather comforting feeling. He strolled on the stony pathway alone while joggers moved past him, no one paying attention to him as usual. There were a few benches scattered along the way, some occupied and some broken.
Not far behind he noticed a little girl playing on her own, tiny hands hovering over a bunch of yellow flowers on the grassy bed. He approached her gently and sat down next to her as she smiled at him and then stared back at the flowers. He reached a hand out and tried to tug one free for her but was stopped immediately by her, chubby face turning into a frown. He understood right away that she didn’t want him to hurt the flower.
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out one of the many pieces of pink paper he somehow always had with him whenever he was conscious. The symbol on it was something that meant ‘Hope’. The little girl’s beautiful eyes widened with delight as his finger meticulously worked their way through and in the end fell out a nicely folded pink paper cherry blossom. He was surprised at how he knew to fold paper flowers and wondered where he had picked it up from. His heart fluttered with warmth when she took it slowly from him, giving a rather loud innocent giggle. He smiled back at her in delight.
“You should be able to hear a little girl giggling not far away from here, am I right?”
He quickly turned his head to the direction of the voice coming from the bench he was behind. Something popped inside him, strange warm feeling coursing through his body.
He turned hurriedly back to the girl to say goodbye but she wasn’t there anymore, the pink paper flower suddenly placed delicately on his open palm. The two men on the bench whom he had heard earlier were also already about ten steps away from where he was.
If he could hear her…
Hope. He decided to have hope again. He clutched the paper cherry blossom tightly in his fist.
And he followed them.
