It's interesting to read, not groundbreaking writing (but not the worst I've ever seen either), and ripe with Gary Stues (most notably Rhonin). I found it a fun read for 'brain fluff', and especially so now that we have some of that lore in-game in the form of instances. But it's not a masterpiece. :P
I liked it. I understand everyone's frustration with the Gary Stue type overpowered character - and there's people who don't like the brain fluff type of writing Knaak does... but I enjoyed the series. I recommend it. These aren't Game of Thrones/Wheel of Time stuff. They're quick reads to appeal to a large audience.
And really, Rhonin only seems overpowered now compared to all our characters. He's a hero type character from Warcraft, not a hero character from WoW. Those major lore characters are much different even in game from what we player characters can do. :) I <3 Rhonin :)
I enjoyed 'em. I think anyone with any interest in the game lore should read 'em once. See if the local library has copies, or borrow from a friend, or wait 'til the bookstore has an epic sale/coupon going on and get 'em then.
These books will NEVER find their way onto the "Top 10,000 Fantasy Books" list. They are worth reading, and buying if you have the spare cash laying about, but don't expect classic literature quality. They're like...well, they come across (to me) as pre-teen target audience in how they're written. I liked them. I found them very interesting. I found them very easy to read. I ignored any technical-type issues with the writing in favor of playing the story out as a movie in my head (I'm VERY visual) and that probably made me enjoy the books more than someone who doesn't do the "movie in your head as you read" thing.
