Hunters v. their bad reps

Apr 06, 2011 11:57

If you don't frequent the forums, or if you didn't see this discussion start, there is a thread that started on the basis of the eternal hunter v. 'huntard' debate. The OP had her group drop just because she was a hunter and is concerned the stigma will always be there for her chosen class. EDIT: Since battle.net is down, I'll add that they said ' ( Read more... )

I feel your pain, though not as a hunter.

I zone in on my DK tank and I can almost feel the collective groan from the rest of the party members. I can tank, I swear it! But because it's "general knowledge" the DKs suck/are assholes/need to ltp, any good (or decent, in my case) DKs are immediately written off and people seem to brace for the worst.

It's kinda depressing, so I know (at least in part) how you feel.

I actually thanked a DK who was 59 for being a good tank and she basically headtilted for me, she lost some mobs but I told her it was all about the fact she communicated with us she was new, had only one taunt, ect. that's half of it for me.

Usually with me the DKs I get in the lower range aren't from tanking specs before hand, they get to that magic 55 and want to jump on a cool new class ability. I did the same thing but realized I can't tank for beans before I made anyone suffer a run with me as their tank lol.

I can't tell why people feel like that - I've seen my share of bad people in EVERY class. The fact that hunters have so many specific gearing, resource management and class mechanics with little or no intervention from Blizzard as to how to actually use them means that while they are picked up frequently by people who are new to the game (for soloing, for cute pets), there's few new people that automatically "get" what they are supposed to be doing. It seems to run high with death knights as well.

Hunter gear is streamlined and fairly non-complex now but people still feel the need to wear strength stuff or whatever.

I'd really like to see people stop referring to people as huntards though as it is fairly disrespectful/ableist.

PS: It's "stigma" not stigmata. Unless your hunter has gaping wounds through her hands/feet. o-o

haha, totally didn't even realize I'd written stigmata. Did a horror movie marathon last night and apparently it's stuck with me this morning XD

My GM yelled at my friend over vent because after he MD'd to him (he was our druid tank) and he didn't bother to attack the target, his pet got aggro. He said he was positive he was MDing to his pet. He doesn't understand that you only have 17 seconds of the hunters aggro til you have to pick it up yourself. 90% of the time you'll be called a huntard by someone who has NO idea about any of the abilities of a hunter.
My favorite stupid non-hunter playing assumptions:
MD is magic and gives tank aggro FOREVER.
Traps have no cooldown and share no cooldown.
Every pet has growl on.
You can stack on a tank and still be at range to attack (warlock/mage style)
You pulled everything, everywhere, everytime.

Oh god my favorite was when I'd dismissed my pet for jumping down to another level, I think it was LBRS and got called on my pet pulling aggro....who was not even active at the time. It was a warlock's demon, but naturally, my pets fault :|

i had this happen to me as well... it was a mage or DK pet, i think, that pulled the ENTIRE stairway of trash in ICC after blood queen. i dismissed my pet and jumped down and everyone started yelling at me in vent, i had NO idea why everyone was so mad at me until I saw the wave of mobs running at us, so i ran away and feigned death and told them to get fucked because my pet wasn't even OUT. someone even pointed out that they saw me dismiss my pet but the raid leader told them to be quiet and gave me a lecture about learning to control my pet. grrrrrrrrr...

I actually use an addon called "tauntwatch" for my prot pally.

it shows me who taunts mobs and 70% of the time i have a hunter in the group my addon spams me with "growl used by Flufferz on Mob." I do ask them to turn growl off and when it's a newbie in the group i smile and try to point them in the right direction. (the newbies ask me how to turn it off and i go d'aaawwwwww)

It makes me sad when people get pissed at me for my pet pulling things. It's like they don't realize that whether my pet is chasing a low-health target that's running in fear or not, more mobs ARE going to be pulled. In fact, it's probably better that my pet IS chasing that particular target because that means it may die before it has a chance to run off and tell all its little friends that there are 5 players just waiting to die 40 yards away. It's not like I'm sitting there going YES LITTLE FOX, YOU CHASE HIM OVER THERE INTO ALL THE OTHER MOBS BECAUSE I AM A HUNTER AND I WISH TO INTENTIONALLY WIPE THIS GROUP BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY EXPECT ME TO DO.

And yes, occasionally I accidentally pull mobs because hunter targeting is effing stupid and I don't want to individually macro every single one of my abilities. But you know what? I've accidentally pulled things on my shaman too, and it's not like hunters are the only ones who ever pull something unintentionally.

That's what I don't get, we AREN'T the only class that does that, and yet no one says a thing for the shammies and the mages who do the same auto hit we do.

And unfortunately, I had to just give up my fox because aside from the cute 'OMG, ITS A FOX.' factor, it liked to just go roam and pull everything regardless of what it was set on.

Hyenas are worse. Sooo much worse. I had a hyena on my hunter doing Stratholme and it basically spazzed out and pulled the ENTIRE dungeon. I don't usually have so many problems with my fox though.

Really?! I was wanting to go tame a pretty Hyena lol, but I certainly don't want one enough to deal with that mess.

I don't run into that many truly bad hunters more so than I run into other stupid players. It is, however, a pretty easy class in terms of pumping out the pew pew and leveling(My level 25ish survival hunter does double the dps of any other class in lowbie dungeons with the occasional mage beating me and I didn't have a clue about rotation until the last week or so). Much like DKs like that, which means more noobs that don't know how to play at high levels unfortunately. (Leveling my DK tank was not fun)

The blame the pet thing though... :[ I have no reason to send my demon after the boss people! I don't know why he did it! But no, pets never bug. >_>
