Hunters v. their bad reps

Apr 06, 2011 11:57

If you don't frequent the forums, or if you didn't see this discussion start, there is a thread that started on the basis of the eternal hunter v. 'huntard' debate. The OP had her group drop just because she was a hunter and is concerned the stigma will always be there for her chosen class. EDIT: Since battle.net is down, I'll add that they said ' ( Read more... )

I wish I could figure out what the deal was with hunters lately. I tanked a few lowbie pugs the other night on my warrior, and between the paladin using threat abilities and the hunter using a tank pet with a knockback, it was a struggle to keep things tidy (and frankly, I would've loved to see a trap or two to help the healer!)

but I can't figure out if it's a throwback to when hunters had to physically go to the stables to switch between their solo pet and their instance pet, or if this was just a new hunter who didn't know any better.

I have seen the "zone in, tank drops group immediately" thing but it's always been because of dps DKs

There's always just going to be that one class that's hated no matter what. It was hunters, then rogues, then paladins, DKs, hunters, shaman, hunters. Having played a hunter for almost 4 years I can say two things: One, that it's not ALWAYS hunters as the Official Most Hated Class and two, that the large majority of the stigma simply stems from the fact that hunters are an easily leveled class and so when you pull from a larger pool, you'll have more incompetent players.

This would also be why I'd encourage you (and anyone else) to stay away from the official forums. Mixing with the general WoW population outside of the game never ends well.

Play your class to the best of your ability and be handy with the /ignore button for jerks. It's simple.

See I rarely go to the forums to deal with the mainstream, usually I just lurk the hunter sector because I do like reading other folks methods to try to improve my game. As much as I chose Hunters for the fact it allowed me to play the game solo, not be so lonely doing so, and actually enjoy the game itself while being alone, ultimately it's meant to be played with others. When I do queue up, I want to hold my own and be worthwhile.

I've never had to /ignore anyone, thankfully, because I've never been specifically called a huntard myself (knock on wood!) I just felt pretty bad for the OP on because of the general response.

I've never found the hunter forums to be helpful in any way, but maybe that's just me! haha

It's been worth it just for the alternate perspective I get, sometimes folks word things differently and makes me think about the game itself in a way I haven't been. :3

Ah... Buggy pets. In the right group (read: close-knit guild raid group) it can be a blast. At the beginning of Wrath, in 25 Naxx, Grand-Widow Faerlina. One of the first times we tried her. Everybody was standing at the back of the room, talking strategy, or not paying too much attention. Suddenly, the other hunter's pet decided it was tired of waiting - and ran up to Faerlina and facepulled her! My pet+2 raiders stuck in the web covering the door during the fight, but we managed to wipe the floor with her - barely. Ah, good times...

Hunters are awesome if played correctly, but unfortunately there are some people who are not living up to their potential, and they make the rest of us look bad.

That's an ablist slur.

Clearly it is, however what I see here is a critical use of the term.

I must have missed the part where she was discussing how "huntard" is ablist and shouldn't be used.

Mm fair enough. You are right of course, it's an offensive word. What I meant is that the OP is not using it totally cavalierly as she herself dislikes it.

I stopped tab targeting eons ago since it just doesn't make a lick of sense why we don't auto to the next closest target, but I feel like it does slow me down considerably when trying to help out, especially because when I assist half the time my tanks are rotating targets to manage threat too. It doesn't seem like it's as effective at smoothly downing anyone the mob unfortunately :

Sometimes it's not tab targeting. If I'm spamming something like Arcane shot because my Kill shot is on cooldown, if I hit it as the mob dies, the game automatically targets for me now. As in it does the tab targeting. I hate it. There was a post about it a few weeks ago with a very helpful hunter macro that helped me figure out what I was doing.

Even with being aware of that, I still pulled extra mobs the last dungeon I ran. But it was with my friends so I could warn them and we handled it.

I hear where you're coming from, but I just wanted to let you know, sometimes we have no control over it unless we don't dps the last tenth of a mob's HPs. And Blizz better be fixing it soon!
