Canon Recs, please

Mar 06, 2010 21:53

I've been a fan of Superman in movies and television since Christopher Reeve wowed everyone in the late 70s.  I enjoyed most of the Batman movies as well.  However, I'm woefully ignorant as to how they work and act together.  I'd like to start writing more S/B fic (I've only done two, and one was only a comment fic), but enjoy writing more when I ( Read more... )

Personally, I recommend the Superman/Batman Annual... the one with the cruise ship, hopefully someone knows the number. It might be one... I don't remember.

The World's Finest movie, it was a three part Superman: TAS episode. It's just called The Superman/Batman Movie on my DVD. XD

Oooo, I have heard about this one in fanon. Hopefully, I can find it somewhere...I love the internet, because I just found it.

Found the movie, too. Thank you so much for taking the time to send me some recs.

The Superman/Batman Annual is No. 1 with the cruise ship story. :)

And, LOL, are you interested in pre-Crisis stories? World's Finest #289 is practically canonical slash! ;)

I've heard about The Crisis, or whatever it's known as, but don't know much about it. I don't care in what time era the stories come from, but I don't know about getting my hands on a copy of this.

Btw, I just read that blog entry a day or two ago somehow. Good lod, you aren't exaggerating in your description of it.

Yep, Crisis is short for Crisis On Infinite Earths (COIE), which smashed Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age canon and replaced it with the Modern Era in 1986.

*grins*

It's a classic! ;)

They made Superman less powerful, right? I don't know what else happened, although I'm sure there are sites out there that talk about it. Thanks for all the info. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.

Hrm... books where they appear together. Well, I would have to start with JLA. Depending on how you felt about the tone of Kingdom Come and regardless of how you like Grant Morrison, I think the Morrison/Waid run of JLA is a must, since it's the first time they are in the JLA together since before the Crisis (that's.. about 10 years of not being in the same team together!). The run includes storylines like World War III, Tower of Babel, Divided we Fall and New World Order. They have nice comradeship moments in the run, and they are incredibly badass ( ... )

*bursts through the door* DID SOMEONE SAY CANON??

Your list looks good so far! I second the Morrison/Waid run on JLA (esp. the ones arch_schatten mentioned) and Emperor Joker (which is yes, totally insane, but the main theme appears to be How much does Clark love Bruce? SO MUCH).

You should try to find the Shogun of Steel Elseworld if you can--it's not technically canon, but it's a story in which Bruce is a girl and she and Clark fall in love and kiss and...so...um...what was I saying?

"World's Finest" by Gibbons is a look back at the beginnings of their friendship, and has super-pretty art if a relationship that's a little prickly for my tastes...but lots of nice moments!

A big problem with S/B canon is that almost any trade out there with one or the other is very likely to have interactions between them, but they're usually just a couple of pages out of the whole trade! So most S/B canon (besides their title and rare stories like Emperor Joker) comes in bits and pieces everywhere else.

Stories that have good S/B moments in them" ( ... )

Oh, yes, The New Frontier! This is very pricey, but if you love the 1950s era, well worth the investment!

And the one scene between Clark and Bruce is fantastic! It includes Dick at his most adorable! :)

Thank you for seconding the rec of New Frontier - it might make the price tag a little easier to bear, knowing that several S/B fans thought it worthwhile, even with only one scene between the two.

I'm more familiar with Dick as Nightwing, so hearing him termed adorable gave me a giggle. I know he was just a small boy at first, but I never had that much exposure to him.

Thanks again for the rec and the help. I appreciate it.

Try Enemies and Allies by Kevin J. Anderson, which was just published last year. (Sorry it's so expensive... maybe you can ask your library to order it for you?) There are some ridiculous writing flaws but the S/B interaction reads like wonderful fanfic, especially the second (third?) chapter. :)

In addition to arch_schatten's suggestions on Grant's JLA, there's also Brad Meltzer's run (Tornado's Path and The Lightning Saga).

OH, OH! Get Superman: Sacrifice! It's wonderful S/B hurt/comfort. :)

Superman/Batman Generations I was a really interesting story. I don't know if that's still in print... There's also a sequel, but I don't remember if I ever read it to recommend it, lol.

There's a great fight between S/B and then they make out up later in Hush volumes one and two.

I'm really sorry I haven't updated with more recommendations on the profile page; I guess I figured people would research DC's long-ass list of graphic novels on their site. But it's also a bit hard to recall really good S/B stories that aren't heavy on continuity outside the ( ... )

I second this! That book is totally Bromance! Especially from Ch.43--I just *love* seeing the boys rescuing one another!

Oh, about Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier? It's been made into DC animated movie Justice League: The New Frontier. And because of Bruce Timm, there's more Batman in it than original comics! *g* If you like NF, I also recommend the New Frontier Special #1 (not in TPB nor in Absolute edition)--it has the whole "deleted" scene of Batman v.s. Superman, and it's *perfect*! (p.s. I love Darwyn Cooke's Diana! She rocks! :D)

Oh God, there is SO much canon S/B that you won't even have to try hard to slash them. The S/B title, starting with 1-18 plus the first annual is like the S/b shippers bible. If yu can find a copy of Shogun of Steel, that has canon Superbat even thought Bruce is a woman in it, lol. But pretty much anything written by Jeph Loeb that has Superman and Batman interacting is automatically going to be slashy. Also the Michael Green run of S/B (especially the "Kryptonite" story arc). Oh, and S/B #50 is pretty awesome. I have scans of all of these of you want me to sendspace them to you.

I think I have a good start on the S/B title, with the first three graphic novels, and I'm going to do my darnedest to get my hands on the annual you and others have mentioned. That one sounds great with them sharing a bed...mmmmmm.

Oooo, Batman as a woman, that would open up some interesting possibilities for the authors, I'd think. I'll keep an eye out for the Loeb name on things as I order.

A Kryptonite story arc? That's sparked some imagination in me. Hopefully, if I like the three I've already bought, I'll order the remainder in the S/B series. Is it on-going or was it finite and is over now?

Scans sound awesome, but I dont' know what sendspace is.
