I've been a fan of Superman in movies and television since Christopher Reeve wowed everyone in the late 70s. I enjoyed most of the Batman movies as well. However, I'm woefully ignorant as to how they work and act together. I'd like to start writing more S/B fic (I've only done two, and one was only a comment fic), but enjoy writing more when I

In addition to arch_schatten's suggestions on Grant's JLA, there's also Brad Meltzer's run (Tornado's Path and The Lightning Saga).
OH, OH! Get Superman: Sacrifice! It's wonderful S/B hurt/comfort. :)
Superman/Batman Generations I was a really interesting story. I don't know if that's still in print... There's also a sequel, but I don't remember if I ever read it to recommend it, lol.
There's a great fight between S/B and then they make out up later in Hush volumes one and two.
I'm really sorry I haven't updated with more recommendations on the profile page; I guess I figured people would research DC's long-ass list of graphic novels on their site. But it's also a bit hard to recall really good S/B stories that aren't heavy on continuity outside the Superman/Batman title. :\
I hope this helps!

I second this! That book is totally Bromance! Especially from Ch.43--I just *love* seeing the boys rescuing one another!
Oh, about Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier? It's been made into DC animated movie Justice League: The New Frontier. And because of Bruce Timm, there's more Batman in it than original comics! *g* If you like NF, I also recommend the New Frontier Special #1 (not in TPB nor in Absolute edition)--it has the whole "deleted" scene of Batman v.s. Superman, and it's *perfect*! (p.s. I love Darwyn Cooke's Diana! She rocks! :D)

I enjoy the animation, so I'll check out the NF, as well.
I appreciate you chiming in and taking the time to rec me some things. Thank you again, so much.

Man, that Sacrifice sounds intense, and the scans are amazing. I'll definitely be looking for that, so I can read it all. Superman seems very susceptible to having his mind controlled. You'd think someone with as strong a character and will-power would be harder to control.
The rest sound very good too, and I have the feeling I'm going to be busy for a while going through all the helpful recs people have made.
That list of DC's is incredible, but pretty intimidating for a newb like me. I'd have no idea where to start, although I could probably narrow it down. I have to admit though, that it didn't even occur to me to check for a list like that or go to DC's site. I fail at the internet this week, I guess.
Thank you for taking the time to help me, anyway. I really appreciate all the links and the awesome stories you've mentioned.

Superman may be powerful enough to lift planes and ships but his heart is just as powerful and just as vulnerable. Throw him into a situation where his sweetheart Lois and/or his parents are about to be killed off and the poor guy will be fighting back tears as he desperately tries to save his loved ones to his death. He's been shown to be pretty emotional before.

I highly recommend thoroughly reading Superman's and Batman's histories on Wikipedia, including their supporting cast, enemies, and other people and things. That's how I started out and it helped me a great deal to figure out what DC's history was like as well as what's going on right now. I spent maybe two or three months really digging and learning about many DC's characters on Wikipedia before starting comics, which eventually gave me an idea where to start. Usually right after a major event (example: Final Crisis, which I personally loathed and don't recommend at all, Blackest Night, which I personally adored, etc) is starting or ending is a good place to start. (I think DC's Blackest Night event is about to end and their Brightest Day event is starting next month.
Also, I suggest finding your little "niche" in the DC Universe. If you're obsessed with Superman, stick with him and you'll eventually get accustomed to his background, the characters, and the type of stories that are told, and it'll eventually become your "home." And maybe you'll grow to love other characters that Superman interacts with, like the Flash, Wonder Woman, or Green Lantern. My home is Gotham City with Batman, as I grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series, and fell in love with Batman's supporting cast and enemies. :)
You didn't at all fail at the internet. :) I just didn't make or link to a step-by-step guide of how/where to start. Well, there's Superman Homepage's Where To Start? guide but it still might be confusing for some people. Also, I can't find a decent one for Batman. :\

Superman is definitely my character - I can identify with him pretty well - much more easily that the darker character of Bruce. I also know him through many canon - all the movies, all the TV shows (except the ill-fated Superboy) including the one that got me into fandom in the first place, Smallville. I've even read some comic stuff on him. So, I feel comfotable with him, it's all the other characters I can't put a finger on yet.
The trouble for me now is time. Before I got into fandom (I didn't even know what fandom was), I didn't have kids and knew the Smallville show very well (seen all eps multiple times). Then, I got into fandom, but wasn't writing yet, so devoured everything I could find to read. Now, I have my twins and I spend all my spare time writing. It doesn't leave a lot of time to become acquinted with new (to me) characters. I want to try though, because Superman/Batman just seem right to me, and I'd love to get a second real pairing under my belt (I've only done PWPs in other fandoms besides Smallville so far - other than the one medium-sized S/B fic I did recently). Way more than you wanted to know, I'm sure. Sorry.
You're nice to say I didn't fail at the internet, but you shouldn't have to put together a guide like that. Searching the net and various places on it should have been the first thing I thought of. Ah well, I really do appreciate how incredibly helpful all of your information is. You really put a lot of time and effort into your recs and your advice. I can't say how much I appreciate it.
Edited for editing fail. *g*
