What is the difference between being knowing and acknowledging how other people perceive you, and being vain?

Does switching from "Other people say that I'm..." to "I'm..." make you, or make you seem, conceited or confident?

Edit: I'm not looking for assurances that I'm not vain. I'm looking for discussion and what people feel is the difference.
