Towards the end of Lent

Apr 04, 2012 23:45

As the UK heads towards its Easter holiday celebration this weekend, the traditional period of fasting (usefully co-inciding with that time of the year when, in years gone by, food stocks would have run very low!) which we call Lent comes to an end.

As the feasting season is in sight, a friend made me a Simnel cake (a fruit cake for Easter) and I ( Read more... )

I didn't get to keep all the cake - the cook took some home with him! But yes, looks delicious and full of good fruit and nuts - don't tell the squirrels :=)

Drinking isn't compulsory :=)

However, making cocktails was one of my dad's enjoyments so it has almost memorial connotations for me and my mum. Somewhere I have his silver cocktail shaker thing but I confess to using a standard Pyrex (hardened glass) jug myself because it has the measurement marks on the side (with the shaker you need to use a separate measure as well) and is much easier to clean (and doesn't need polishing and storing away from the air!).

Ah, the blessed DVD! I'm sure I will be almost too excited just holding this great sleepy (one of the 7 dwarves was called Sleepy - this is an odd thought!) treasure to watch it for a while. Must read pyroyale's synopsis again too...

Thanks for your visit here.

Really? *licks screen* I'm not so sure! Cute idea of yours though.

I seem to be stirring a lot of memories for you! But then, when we are small, tastes and smells are very powerfully connected with memory, no? I wonder why we lose this when we get older? In some ways, we seem to get more stupid (dull) as we age!

Hmm. Not really. I prefer you to have a good source of motivation and liveliness within yourself, not dependent on outside stimulation (from Gackt, from YFC, from me, from anyone/thing ( ... )

I see you are up to your drink mixing experiments again. Sounds like your concoction was a success! I bet it's been about 20 years since I ate any fruit cake. I wasn't a fan. But your cake looks so fresh and moist.

That's a ridiculously long time to get held up in customs. After that long of a wait, the DVDs definitely deserve the accompaniment of fine sake. Enjoy!

Ah, there is fruit cake and then there is fruit cake! I think this one will be very nice. One reason I think this is because the cook took the missing piece back for himself! He won't do that if it is not nice ( ... )

Yes, I've eated those dried fruit things before. I think the ones I had were called fruit leather. Not an appetizing name, but they were quite good. I haven't tried the orange peel and almond variety.

The cake looks delicious! Your hazelnut liqueur sounds good, too.

On Easter Sunday I will be having lunch with friends in the next town.

I'm lucky to have friends who make cake to share - I was given the larger portion for me and my mother. It's quite wholesome too (more than just fat and sugar!).

Ah, the hazelnut liqueur is indeed very nice, and not as as sweet as you might imagine. The bottle says that it contains herbs and berries, as well as hazelnuts, so the flavour is quite well balanced in its own right. In fact, it probably the only one of those four that would be enjoyable neat.

I'm pleased that you'll be celebrating Easter with friends at lunch - that does sound good! I have someone to cook for tomorrow evening (Good Friday), which is slightly strange timing and a bit of an unkwnown quantity as my guest is an acquaintance rather than a friend (we have a functional reason to meet and this is the only day she can manage). I'm opting for fish as an overt nod to Lent and Friday and as a private satisfaction in using a Christian symbol! (I confess to getting bored with my own cooking so adding themes and jokes is one way to keep interested).

Lent officially ended last night. We are in the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday). I think I will make some tuna salad -- I have not had that for awhile. I would also like to have salmon patties ... I might go to the store and get some.

I hope you and your acquaintance have a pleasant meal tonight.

BTW, I don't bake cakes or desserts. I have had too many "disasters". My brownies turned out like black driveway sealant :( ... it is okay to laugh. Now you know why I shy away from baking aside from being diabetic.

Ah, I thought the triduum started in the evening on Thursday? Never mind - my evening will come before yours!

My acquaintance gets fed tomorrow night. I'm just thinking about it now because it feels like a big deal! Usually I spend Good Friday on more reflective matters than peeling onions and chopping mushrooms. I guess I just need to extend my powers of reflection a bit further ;=)

Oh, I'll remember you when my drive shows a crack! I have no oven - I can't do black driveway sealant any more *is smug* The diabetes sounds like an even better reason than the no oven. Do you grow good fruit in your area? The strong-looking geraniums have persuaded me that your climate (minus the strorms) is good for oranges and grapes and such!
