Towards the end of Lent

As the UK heads towards its Easter holiday celebration this weekend, the traditional period of fasting (usefully co-inciding with that time of the year when, in years gone by, food stocks would have run very low!) which we call Lent comes to an end.

Ah, there is fruit cake and then there is fruit cake! I think this one will be very nice. One reason I think this is because the cook took the missing piece back for himself! He won't do that if it is not nice :=)

Do you like fruit sweet/dessert type things? When I was in France in February, I tried some apricot "cake" (this is just gently cooked apricot purée, pressed and sort of dried a bit into a firm consistency that you can cut). I think I've had something similar made with quinces and called quince "cheese". Have you tried Italian panforte, I wonder? This is similar to the "cake"/"cheese" but is made with candied orange peel and almonds, usually flavoured with spices (so a harder texture and a stronger taste). These are all vegan-friendly but I'm not sure whether you'd enjoy any of them!

On the DVD, I'm not sure how much of the wait was the customs part - everyone in the supply chain seems to have added their own piece of delay! On the other hand, to receive treasure on a public holiday weekend makes the arrival (and the time to enjoy it) extra special. I'm happy!

Yes, I've eated those dried fruit things before. I think the ones I had were called fruit leather. Not an appetizing name, but they were quite good. I haven't tried the orange peel and almond variety.

Was the DVD worth the wait? Hope you enjoyed!
