Ah, for once your suspicions are misplaced! The pheasant was really there and in true colour: the background has been de-saturated and faded to make the pheasant stand out. Seems that the trick worked rather too well!
Y, coping with funerals which remind me of my dad isn't my strong point but - it was as OK as could be expected. The weather was grubby - down to -15C on the East coast that night and we passed a car in the ditch on the way to the service in the morning so I was very careful on the corners. Our poor hosts had me recited from Chapter 3 of the Book of Wisdom over the breakfast table - I bet they don't get that often!
I was gonna ask if that pheasant was photoshopped in too! They're so beautiful o3o I'd love a pheasant, but we don't have room for any more birds, and I don't think a pheasant would be friendly to my ickle quails. AND SO MUCH SNOW (up north)! *is jelly*
ANYWAY.
You seem to live such an interesting life *paws at screen* That print looks really awesome. Do love me some Nelson, which reminds me... do you know anything about the rumours of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard going to be shut? Can't find anything out about it myself, just wondering if you did D: since you seem to be up on all the historic-military stuff (or so I get the opinion? P:)
Hello to you in the Deep South! Nope, that pheasant was very real and having a good time hoovering up the grain spilt from the bird-table above
( ... )
Just how big is the print?! You make it sound like you've been given a mural!
I heard the rumour about the museum, but then there was all this stuff about Portsmouth wanting to spend more money on building a new football stadium (right where the Warrior is). Who knows P:
Did you see that BBC program last week about the Cutty Sark? I never actually got to see it before it burned, so now I'm rather looking forwards to going up when it reopens :]
I have a somewhat silly resentment over Eros... I got lost in Picadilly looking for the Japan Centre, and after about an hour of walking, we just managed to do a complete circle (missing the Japan Centre entirely) and ending up endless at Eros. And it was crawling with tourists... or drunk students... or both. Did you take the photo at night, or was that photoshopped too? :P
The print is the proportion that you see in the little pic in my post. Width-wise, it just fitted at a tilt in my boot so it's about 4ft something, I guess, and has a large white engraved panel underneath telling you what it is and that it was originally painted for the Palace of Westminster. It was too long to fit on the first wall that I tried to hang it on! Pretty much a mural
( ... )
The bird in my photo is a pheasant which you have in Japan in a more green colour, I think: 雉子 maybe? In Chinese (Cantonese, that is), the pheasant is usually called "saan gai" which means mountain chicken. This is weird as I don't believe that mountains are a good habitat for pheasants (they need grassland to breed?). The Western ones originally came from NE of Turkey (probably Georgia), I think, but they are pretty widespread in Asia now. In the UK, pheasants are more or less farmed (hatched by farmers and pen-reared/fed) to provide targets for shooting in the autumn - and to provide dinner afterwards.
My friend in Tokyo uses the expression 雉も鳴かずば打たれまい which, I think, vaguely equates to the English saying (when you reap the blame/bad consequences of your own actions) "the chickens have come home to roost". Strange that both expressions with similar meaning use the bird metaphor.
Thanks for taking a look at the whole post here and for your comment.
thanks for the wishes and wishing you he same!! :D
ah ha! that is quite an impressive photo well done :D
im sry to hear about your friend. my condolences.
the painting looks impressive.. and you are quite right.. i cannot seem to pinpoint the subject of the painting. tho i spose by the movement of the people and the angle they point to, hes the one in the middle with a blue jacket.
cool photo with the pheasant :D tho it only makes me shudder even more! everyone is very cold lately even here.. usually it hailed maybe once or twice in a winter.. but its been hailing pretty frequently here >> today we had some hail too! i dnt like the cold......
Hello! It is slightly warmer now - the snow has gone for a while but we can still have ice in the morning so there is no confusing the season with the Spring!
Yep - you're exactly right: Nelson is the one that the composition "points" to. I think the original of that painting was VERY large in size so you had to walk along it.
I used to write to this old guy every 1 or 2 weeks (I've done this for perhaps 4 years) so it feels weird that he is not there to send a card/letter to now. He was always interested in my project for Lent - usually I will read a particular book and make some notes (he liked to have a copy of the notes).
Another Maltese friend has sent my mum a 2012 calendar of the Msida Historic Bastion gardens. Looks very pretty. Don't think it was there or open when I was last in Malta.
heya! sry so late! here its not that nicer XD its been raining all day and its been awful! i had to meet some friends but i didnt dare... >>
sounds like the painting is quite amazing in real life.
ah i know the feeling.. vaguely.. i had a friend like that years ago that i used to write to (not as often as you) which also left us. so i kind of know the feeling... she was also the first person close to me that i lost ..
anyways! were not here to depress ourselves! the world already does that all the time!
oh ? is it nice? i actually discovered it this past weekend.. by discovered i mean i saw a sign in Valletta.. ironically its in Valleta apparently.. (hence why i noticed the sign!) i sincerely know less than you about what we have in Malta... my favourite place is Mdina.. i love it there, peace quiet, and beauty! all is left is some decent parks... I enjoyed Russel Square in London .. or when i went near the RIver in Birmingham <3

I'm glad that you coped with the funeral, and with getting around in the poor weather conditions.
