i feel terrible when i cringe at the work of someone i really like and consider a friend. this has been happening so much lately. i am unsure if my tastes are changing a lot, or what, but it seems to me like lots of really great people's work seems to be moving backward instead of forward.

i couldn't agree more. there is one maker specifically who i looked up to from the get go but i feel like i've surpassed them or they just took seven steps backwards. =/

I don't cross post my icons lots of places because I know people won't care. Better to just keep making them in solitude than know people are ignoring my work.

I hate reading secrets like yours, anon. It's so sad knowing that anyone feels their work is ignored. Have you ever tried crossposting at a big comm though, like -fandom-icons-? In general, makers tend to be their harshest critics, so your work may actually end up being received better than you expect, and you're just limiting yourself by not crossposting at more (and/or bigger) places. Also, huge icon promotion comms draw all sorts of people, so you never know but there may be lots of folks just waiting to see a new maker concentrating on the fandoms that he/she likes.

I strive to make icons like absolutelybatty, wickedgrdn, sarisafari and kawaii_chicken. Their icons are perfect. Every single one of them. I know that I'll never be as good as them, but they are my icon heroes. Mad love and respect to them. I just wanted to say how much I love their stuff without being a giant creeper, even though this still sounds pretty creepy. :\

They all make vastly different work, and each does so in her own highly creative and skilled ways. Not bad footsteps to wanna follow in!

Idk how to trends. Everyone keeps saying "someone start a new trend!" and the like, and I think ME I WANT TO START ONE but then I don't know how and I wonder if I'm missing something because other than a few common themes I don't spot trends like the rest of you seem to. How do they work and how do they change.

FORREALLL. It's so weird to see them like, change before your eyes! Like on tumblr, all of the sudden EVERY GRAPHIC is made with times new roman and there are white lines and lots of space between words (lol I hope this makes sense). JUST CAME OUTTA NO WHERE. Same with icons, I know I've been through a few eras myself. Just can't help but wonder if the person who initiated sits back and is like FYEAH, I STARTED THIS and they feel proud or if they're annoyed like GD I DID THIS FIRST >:[

Have to assume it's just a fluke or a thing that happens at chance.
