I don't cross post my icons lots of places because I know people won't care. Better to just keep making them in solitude than know people are ignoring my work.

I hate reading secrets like yours, anon. It's so sad knowing that anyone feels their work is ignored. Have you ever tried crossposting at a big comm though, like -fandom-icons-? In general, makers tend to be their harshest critics, so your work may actually end up being received better than you expect, and you're just limiting yourself by not crossposting at more (and/or bigger) places. Also, huge icon promotion comms draw all sorts of people, so you never know but there may be lots of folks just waiting to see a new maker concentrating on the fandoms that he/she likes.

Can't speak for everyone, but I tried that and got fewer comments than when I posted to only fandom specific/challenge comms... main reason I went back to being a hermit iconmaker.

Yeah, that's been my experience too. I thought posting to fandom_icons would make more people notice my icons but so far it's been a total bust. :(

Posting there has done almost nothing for the traffic to my comm or the comments and watchers I get.

I'm sorry to hear that, OP. Please do try and take heart in the comment you do receive though. It isn't really easy getting your work to a wide audience. Have you been making icons for a long time? I've been at it for about 3.5 years and just really began getting more attention sometime in 2010 even though I crosspost at a million places and pretty much always have.

Oh I do take heart in the few comments I receive. I feel like a broken record thanking each one, but I get excited and really do appreciate the 2 - 3 comments! I only get frustrated when I realize I've made icons for like 5 years and even though my old stuff was shit, now that I've improved, I still get the same attention as when it was horrible.

I assume you tried more than once but if it was just that once, maybe it was a fluke? Like just so happens that post didn't garner that much attention because of the fandom? I crosspost to those big multifandom communities but I kind of figure that the ratio of people that join said communities to promote their own versus actually wanting the comm on their flist is pretty skewed. Maybe try specific fandom communities?
