I made this cake for my nephew's 2nd birthday last weekend (I'm his fairy god mother, so I have to do nice things like this!) It took about 4 hours all up, including cake baking time (the cake was HUGE). Its a rich chocolate cake (almost mud, but not quite) covered in buttercream and dessicated coconut. The googly eyes were made from marzipan ( Read more... )

Hug this thing, and it will turn you blue. I think the best bit was when all these 2 year olds started cramming it in their mouths, blue went EVERYWHERE! I'm pretty sure parents hated me... oh wells!

parents hating you is the point of kids parties isnt it?

Pretty much! I always go out of my way to buy my nephew the noisiest toys ever as well.... I fear what will happen to me if I ever have children!

licorice is a good idea! You could probably use licorice straps or something to do the mouth maybe... I hate it though, so maybe that's why I subconsciously didn't think of it!

it's pretty straight forward, just a bit time consuming! I made the fuzzy bits by shaking together dessicated coconut and blue liquid food colouring until it got to the right darkness, and then drying it out in the oven with just the fan on it! I cheated with the cookies and made them from a mrs. crocker's packet mix and they were delicious!

You did an amazing job! Have you done much cake work like this before, or was this a new experience for you?

I would love to try my hand at something like this, but I guess I'm not brave enough. Although with a finished product as cute as the one above, I may have to give it a go even if I screw it up!

this was my first kiddy cake. I did catering in school and part of that course was cake decorating, in the "wedding" style mostly... this cake was definitely more fun and easier than making flowers from sugar paste, that's for sure!

Thank you for the idea~! ^_^ spookylolly April 26 2008, 13:36:53 UTC
So, I showed my (40 year old) husband your photos, and he got really excited and insisted we try making one ourselves. Haha!

It turned out really well! :D

I can't take credit for the pics unfortunately, my camera is so crappy, all I got was a blue blur. These ones are the photographic styling from my bro-in-law who has a fancy camera with zooms and such!
